    Hi All,

My dad is a trucker. Many of my cousins and friends are truckers. After working in the same place for 10 years, I decided I will get my CDL and team up with my dad to drive interstate. I am married and have 1 child and another due soon.

For those who have families at home, how do you deal with not seeing them for days?

Cell phones. Also skype if you have it. In so.e areas your phone wont have signal depending on what carrier you have. I have at &t and had no signal in several states.

Stay home with the new baby. Don't dump all the baby care onto your spouse. That breeds resentment which will burn you later.

I hate to be a rain on the parade wait until the children are grown.

The schedule we'll work is 5 days drive, 1-3 days home. 5 days drive, 1 week off. The schedule won't be too bad imo.

The other plus side to running with your dad is that he won't be greedy for miles. The more regularly he gets you home, the more often he gets to see grandkids. Win win.

If your dad is an owner operator and has the freedom to come home often and not do long hauls it might work out for you. If you're going to be gone weeks at a time you can kiss that marriage goodbye.

No weeks gone at a time.

He's not and owner operator but, he can choose when to go and when to come, when to take a vacation and when not to. Just about all drivers in this company can.

Just make sure she is on board with your new career plan. Having two little ones is a lot of work and very stressful and she may come to resent your absence. I have two boys ages 10 and 12 and I miss them all the time but they are getting older and don't need their dad that much.

She's on board. She actually suggested I do it for a while so that she'll be able to stay home. Right now she is working part time in the hospital. With a new baby, he wants to be home with her all the time. I may do it for a while and then turn to local driving, or who knows. I love driving, so that's a plus.
