Lol. They outlawed gold once. hell, they outlawed beer! You really think driving cars would be tough?

Btw, the proles won't be buying cars in the future. They'll just rent by the hour. Much cheaper. It comes and gets you whenever you want, then it goes away. Why on earth would you want to own it?

I can see renting cars increasing yes. Self driving mandate? Not even on their radar. That would be struck down immediately. That could be argued as restricting free travel which is in your constitution. Besides, who would obey? Nobody lol

The law they made for outlawing gold ownership was so they could print enough money to finance the spending the government was doing in the 30s. At the time, the government needed 40% of the value of the money they printed to be stored as gold. Then when the dollar was taken off the gold standard in 75 (?) the fiat currency really began. Printing like crazy ever since. And even if they declared it once again illegal to own gold and the citizens had to hand it in in exchange for what is effectively simply just paper.....how much do you think they'd get? Also, you really think the people of today would hand it in? They'd tell the gov to go fly a kite, as well they should.

I don't see how these 2 things are related at all.

You want to learn some interesting stuff about American money, look up the 'petrodollar'.

Every time this subject comes up, most of us agree on the same conclusion. It's never going to happen in our driving careers if at all.

I use commercial airlines as a perfect example. They've been able to fly fully autonomous for at least the last 10 years, and yet they still have a pilot and co-pilot in every ####pit. Commercial jets don't have lanes on a road, snow and ice covered roads requiring chain ups, blow outs, and an endless list of other things that can happen which a computer can't handle. Technology fails sometimes, and people die because of those failures. A couple weeks ago, and brand new Boeing jet in Indonesia crashed and killed hundreds. They already know what happened. The jet computer "thought" that the jet was about to stall and attempted to put the jet into a dive to increase speed. All the pilots had to do was turn off the auto pilot and fly the jet, but they panicked and crashed. A few years ago another jet crashed on approach to San Francisco. It was coming in on autopilot and was too low. It was skipping across the water of the bay just before the runway started and the pilots weren't paying attention and it crashed killing a number of people.

If these things happen on jets worth tens of millions of dollars, why should the tech on autonomous cars be any better?

You guys and this crap, you don't seem to realize that in order for this all to work, one thing that has to be done - a complete overhaul of the road infrastructure, and that' AIN'T going to happen in our lifetime.

An autonomous vehicle will wreck within five minutes in Atlanta. Not even a supercomputer can figure out the stupidity of Atlanta drivers.

Well that's the other problem, they can't coup with the idiocy of the average US driver, so they have to have roads built just for them.

And how long do you think it's take for your average driver to look over there in the autonomous only area and see a quick way somewhere?

In the 1960's subscribers to the magazine Popular Mechanics read stories about the marvel's of cars that could fly. It was said that by the 1990's everyone would be flying around like the Jetson's. And of course that never happened. This whole thing about automated trucks taking over trucking and putting us out of work is never going to happen. This a a venture capital black hole that confirms again P.T. Barnum's famous point that a fool and his money are soon parted is true. Automated trucking is another transportation industry buzz word and nothing of any real substance.

    I'll keep it short.

The more they overengineer Mr Robot Truck, the easier it is to screw it up. Four terrorists with a specific vehicle pattern placing a Propane tanker in a no win choice crashing it. Take out a small town or perhaps a stadium.

Bad weather? HA. What part of aint going that way don't Mr Robot Understand.

Robot cars have killed people already, robot bigrig will just break the US Mint in Lawsuiting after taking out a bus it did not expect on a curve.

There have been threads before where we joyfully tore apart the technology. You wanna go to 200 miles west of Platte NE to recover a stranded Mr Robot crying for help?" HA.

There are places still a driver with a load makes it safe a robot truck could be taken off line with 4 cuts of a bolt cutters under the battery cover. Snip. Breach trailer and gone. No cargo. You hold the bag.
