I’m looking at a new fifth wheel. It’s still on a pallet, manufactured 2018. Supposed to be new. Is there any tell tale signs between new and rebuilt I could look for? New plates being such rough castings, it’s clean looks new. Any ideas? Rebuild kits have any distinguishing differences?
FW35 fifth wheel, new or rebuilt? How can you tell the difference?

If it was latched to a trailer just one time even if no miles were put on it there would be some kind of witness marks on the plate from grit or the trailer plate sliding on it.
Jaws in the Holland FW35 rebuild kits are the same as new but they are different then original jaws used in the older ones. 1947-90’s year models. They are thinner (not as tall) than the old ones and sit a little lower from the under side of the older plates. Does not effect latching/unlatching. Just looks funny when unlatched because they drop down farther then the old jaws did and sorta look like they are upside down. You gotta see it for yourself to understand. Lol!
Was it a dealer or shop take off? Someone made a straight truck from a new tractor?black_dog106, Bean Jr. and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
I have no idea. The Guy Liquidates Auto Parts. Buy Trailers full of stuff. One Trailer has 15 assorted Fifth wheels. 10 left, 5 Fw35s to choose from. I’ve been needing a new one. Prices have gone up. Average is $1350 internet delivered to $1500+ Locally. Inventory is scarce. This one is $1000. Looks new, except no shiny paint, that I’ve seen on displays at Dealers. Cylinder looks old in picture. Maybe just dusty. Not a bad price for a rebuilt either. Rather have new. Cores are advertised for $350. Maybe sell mine quick for $200? Instead of scrapping it. 210lbs. Doubt I’d get $25 scrap.

This one looks like it has the draw bar handle on the wrong side. As far as I knew all FW35s have left side release draw bars. Looking closer, I don’t see a front adjustment bolt at all.

Looks like it hasn’t had the saddle pins in it. I’m betting new from some kind of surplus.
New plates were one coated with a cheap low gloss black just to keep them from rusting because most of the time they were repainted color matched to the chassis they were installed on.
Not uncommon for dealers to remove a bunch from trucks if customer wants different brand or has their own. Also was a practice in the past to sell a truck without one to get by customer having to pay the extra FET. Then install after delivery.
Is that cylinder for a remote dash unlatch switch or just an extra safety lock? I never seen that before.Bean Jr. and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
All my old trucks are rightside.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I’m going to have to look at all of them. Haven’t seen what all he has yet. Holland shows left hand release as standard. I have no idea what the cylinder is. Might be an air release, and maybe a no slack self adjusting wheel? I’m going to look at Holland’s site again. Try to identify it. At least have an idea, before looking at them. Maybe negotiating the price. Helps to know what I’m looking at. Lol.

My mistake, available in left or right and air assist.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Well according to Holland that part # is a left hand release. Looks legit. Maybe a reversed photo. Front bolt must be there, I sure dont see it. Looking at it in person tomorrow. Thanks for the help. Not too keen on the air release. Nice feature, if it works I guess. I’d be afraid of accidentally hitting the button. Lol.
