I had a 959 at one time they are cheaply made and do not hold up well esp. for the money they want for them. The boards in them are not very strong and prone to failure. They are basicly a watered down 148 cobra and share the same guts as the ranger freedom watever whatever radio they sell in the truck stop.I have had that one as well and it had to go back a few times for solider connections coming apart.
I then decided to buy a decent radio and bought a connex 4300hp 4yrs ago it has everything I need and more and other than getting converted it has never been back to the cb shop.A good radio from a cb shop does not cost much more than the over priced crap they sale at the truck stop.

The Galaxy 949 & the 959 are SSB radios you are correct..
If you like to operate on sideband channels, either one wont put a big dent in your pocketbook.
Depending on where you buy them prices do vary as kelgar50 mentioned.

A Cobra148 will SMOKE either without looking back.
The 949/959 are low end Galaxy garbage IMO. Yes Ive owned them and still do to this day, their on a shelf covered in dust.
The Cobra 148 is well proven and chosen by many to run on SSB.Tuned properly they talk BIG(just a well) on Am.

heard....well read that the solder in them fall apart from shaking in truck....

was curios cause they LOOK all that, but reveiws says diff in alot of cases...

i got that uniden thats modded but i FEEL the cobra gets out better...both with tune and peak but uniden has turbo echo...but i THINK COBRAS are better.

had both radios at same time during work...used both for full day....cobra i was told was a bit louder....thats with a patient trucker that waited for me to hoook and unhook radios...did this with him about 3 miles apart 10 or so minutes. he had cobra 29 vas well...radio checks he had said cobra sounded cleaner...

uniden is made in philipines to....cobras about ten years old stamp on it forgot. but was tuned and peaked....:biggrin_25515:

I've been running a 949 for nearly 3 years now and have never had a problem with it. I'm not a huge CB talker, but I have never had anyone tell me my radio sounded like crap.
