I'm looking to spend $200 on a new radio. I want a Galaxy DX959, but I've been hearing that the Cobra 148GTL is a better radio minus the Frequency counter.
Being that said, it would seem like the DX 949 and 148GTL are compeditors.
Does anyone here know what radio is the best of the two? I'm looking at something that will do a good job on ssb + hi and low band am.

I'm confused. What do you mean by "low band". Do you mean channel 1 thru 10. Outside the 40 channels (illegal)?

If SSB is your thing look at something other than Galaxy, they tend to drift....You "might" find a used 2950DX/2970DX in the $200 range which are a lot more stable on SSB..

Could you explain to me what drifting means? Can drifting be corrected if I had the radio professionally tuned and modded?

A Galaxy is known for not being stable or drifting which means it will not stay on the set frequency...I honestly don't know if a good tech could correct the drifting or not I have not heard of a fix..

Drifting is where the frequency does not stay stable.

On any SSB radio, you have to "tune" the other party in via the clarifier knob.

On Galaxy radios, you can tune your party in but after a few minutes the other party might get off frequency due to your radio....so in other words the other party is no longer on the same frequency as you because your SSB Galaxy decided it wanted to go up a few frequencies higher....the end result is the other party might sound ok once you dial them in but in a few minutes they'll sound like Donald Duck and you'll have to redial them back in again. This is not something you want.
