is it really worth the extra money to get the slightly bigger radio? After getting it peaked and tuned,.. maybe ad an echo board in it.. will it be any stronger than the 949???
looking for best bang for the buck..

or would it be better to go ahead and get the DX 33hml which comes with an echo board in it already??
Again, i know the name, and like they way they look.. but am open to discussion on it... what do you think????? -
THAT SAID ....
Now I don't beleve in peaking radios if you feel you need more power and a hot receiver get a linear with a preamp. A LEGAL 4 watt Cb radio is very unlikely to peak out at more than 20 watts and a $100 linear will get you at least 100 watts out .....
I DO NOT work on CB radios because of my job and it's requirement to hold a FCC GROL license ..... I don't go around risking it just to make a few bucks on CB radios so what you get from me is a honest opinion on how to get things done ... CB or otherwise ...... No i dont mend broken hearts .....just radios.
The BEST thing to do is try to get a good antenna system going even a $29 CB set hook to one can do a very good job and don't be fooled by adds that look too good ( AKA JOGUNN AUDIO GAIN ) or some place tring to tell you that they are 20% better or have some magic water or ( SNAKE ) oil at the base that will make their antenna go father .
Simply put common sence works wonders ...... -
honestly appreciate your reply, and think I have changed my mind on what I am going to get.. really really really appreciate your two cents.

A 949 is the same as a 959 but w/o the frequency counter.
-
I personally like the Galaxy 979. Pretty much the same thing as the other galaxy's and it comes with variable power, single side band and a nice looking front faceplate with the big meter. Upgrade the finals in the bad boy and you have a good radio.
-
the 949 959 and 979 can all be modified in may ways, including the "Viagra" board. that is a channel kit that is a very easy swap, it involves removing a connector off the board, hooking it to the channel board, then one that comes with the kit to the radio. a tech will have to install it, as there is some wiring to a switch for the +10kc and a hole that needs to be drilled for the band selector.
i do not like the look of the big meter radios, call me old school. i have a 20+ year old Pluto that is one smoking radio.
if you want to get one of those radios to add channels, the 959 has the freq counter and it would be easier to tell the channels apart.
remember, the 949 959 are type accepted radios, meaning they are legal and approved by the FCC. once the viagra board is installed, it is no longer legal. the "export" radios such as the galaxy, northstar, magnum and stryker radios are illegal for use in the 11 meter band. -
What does the Viagra board do exactly? what is the difference from the way the radio is, and where do you get it?
-
the viagra board adds one band below and one band above the regular 40 channels, so a 40 channel radio becomes 120 channels. and it adds them to sideband as well. i dont remember if the 959 has sideband. check your PM here.
-
I don't know about the 959 but my 979 does have single side band.
