I've been offered a job driving garbage trucks locally for BFI. Originally I thought it would be great, but I was mislead when I showed up to the interview to find out this was a residential collection contract, in one of the worst areas around here.

I was hoping for overhead collection at businesses, rarely deal with people and just do your route. This job involves picking up the garbage bins at every house along multiple streets. They tell me it is the teamsters union, so I figured great, $25 an hour at least to start, maybe max out at $28 an hour or so. Not even close. Start at $21 an hour and wait until the next contract comes up to get a raise. This is an entirely new contract the company bid on, so it does not follow all the same rules as the other union jobs do. No STAT holidays off, ever. Holiday time is not permitted, for ANY reason, in the months of April, May, June, July, and August. They were very clear on these points, short of your own death, no matter what, you have to work all holidays, and no time off in the summer months. There is no such thing as a Christmas shut down or anything like that. I am realizing the unfortunate thing with garbage is it always has to move no matter what

I came off the highway as an owner operator, and the idea of dealing with people everyday, and only driving 75 feet at a time, listening to glazed brake pads squeal at high pitched levels does not sound like much to get out of bed for.

Maybe I should fussy to you guys, but I have a feeling this job would turn me into one bitter angry man!

Anyone have experience with this kind of work? Just wondering what you guys think.

I don't know about Canada but most refuse company contract renewals end up resulting in strikes or lockouts . When all is said and done it is more likely concessions will be made and benefits lost .

People in BC sit at the curbside waiting for their garbage collector? That's odd! My old place had BFI pick up our garbage and rarely did I see him deal with people on my street if ever. Might have to deal with the dogs barking though.

Seriously though, try it out and see if it works for you.

The money you make in the garbage industry is higher cause well let's face it.. It's garbage.. $21/hr isn't too bad and you can get a raise at the end.. Like said before usually lockouts or strikes happen.... Now I think with BFI it's sound like a crappy deal as far as stat holidays go and vacation.. I mean I don't even know how you can be forced to work a stat holiday that is why it's called statutory holiday.. I would assume if you work a state holiday you would be entitled to overtime pay (1.5x or double time)...

If you can get into a City job they pay a little higher then the private companies... I work at the city and when I was a garbage collector I was making about $10/hr more then most private sector companies... Most of them out here are paying about $18-19/hr plus some also include a tonnage bonus as well.. At the city we get paid for stat holidays and if we work them we also get double pay (so for 8hrs we get triple time, after 8hrs we get double time)...

What would be a good gig is transportation of the waste.. You can make a decent coin doing this if you work for the right company (both public and private sectors).... I am making good money hauling waste for the City.. Now I don't haul garbage just recycling, food waste and yard-waste mostly... Sometimes compost or crushed glass as well... Most companies out here pay decent for hauling trash (union and non-union... company driver or O/O) ...

I would say maybe if you would be interested in advancing into hauling the material then suck it up at BFI and maybe you can eventually get into the haulage section of BFI... Then you could not have to deal with the public anymore... I enjoy collections when I used to do it, you have bad days and good days (ie rain/snow sucks!!!!) ... I use to have residents come out with water or pop on hot days..

I make $750 or $800 on a stat, don't mind working them at all. Hauling crude is similar, doesn't matter what other people are celebrating, it's gotta move every day and if it's your scheduled day you work it. No shut downs ever.

Do you notice the difference in money?

I will gladly work a stat for $800 per day. I would make $168 per day for a stat. Since stats are considered a normal day at this job, they do not pay time and a half for them.

I don't know what your doing to make the kind of money your making, or who your working for, but I would sure like to know.

I'm running a tanker in the Saskatchewan oilfields, hauling produced fluids (oil and water). I work for a o/o who pays me double and a half on stats.
