The Maps will load to the computer first then transfer to the unit. Before it was found out that when the maps were directly pushed to the unit and not saved to the computer that if a file was corrupted or the download was interrupted then the unit was rendered useless. Now pushing maps to the computer first if the download is interrupted the unit is still useable. The maps are trying to download to your internal drive and if not big enough will bring up an error. I don't think you have the option of changing the "path" in the software to point it to another drive. Then you run into the issue of trying to push the new maps to the unit whereas the software is looking internally for the maps. You might give Garmin a call to see if they have a workaround. You can always change out the internal HD to one with more storage. Go SSD if possible.

A little googling suggests you won't get far with Garmin support.
OP states a laptop with a small ssd and a large external drive.
OS unknown.
Now installing a larger SSD seems like a whole lot of effort just to update a GPS, especially if you own something like my Surface. It's not really an option in many cases.
If a windows based system the easiest option is to simply find more free space on the drive. Get rid of temp files, shrink recycle bin, reduce amount of space for system restore files, disable hibernation temporarily, move more stuff to external drive, mount an sd card etc. -

Seems replacing the Internal HD is not an option unless you want to go the hard route.

So I also concur... get rid of the pre-loaded software that you do not need or use. Clean out temp files. CCleaner or IOBit works. -
You will need to clear some space on your maid HDD you can try these tips if this doesn't clear enough let me know may be able to help you out. I build my own computers and have been working on them for over 10 tyears
