I am having trouble doing a route on my Garmin. Seems that lately I have been crossing Illinois through Chicago. I work for an O/)) and he likes to avoid tolls where it is easy. I also like to avoid Chicago. I used to go Around Chicago by taking 39 from Wisconsin and then using 80 going East. I am coming from NJ and he wants me to take I-70 to Indy and then 74 to 39. I can do it without the GPS but still like having it show me the way. I tried inputting my present location ( Hebron,Ohio) and then Mpls. Garmin wants me to go around Chicago on 90/94 and 290. I tried entering cities along my route but then the GPS assumes I am going through those cities and takes me onto city streets. How do I get the GPS to take my route? On the way East when I left Rochelle to go down to I-80 the GPS kept telling me to go back. Finally after 3 exits it figured out my route! I don't think the problem is the GPS. It is ME! Help appreciated.

I know how to make it do what you want it to do i'm just not sure if I can explain it to make sense.

Say you want to go to mpls and its going to route you through Chicago but you want to go up 39 instead just like your example was. Set your gps to a town that will take you around Chicago like Ottawa(its on 80 just east of 39). When you get well past Chicago cancel Ottawa in your gps and re-enter Mpls. It fakes the gps into your desired route and by canceling the fake town when youre on the way there it won't direct you into it and down city streets.

on your computer go to (truck miles dot com) then click in truck practical then click avoid tolls. will give you a map plus written directions. will not do anything bad to your computer, have been using them for years. lots of luck on your trip

Get the Rand Truckers map and use it with your gps. And the truck stop cheat book is good to have as well. However, going around tolls can sometimes cost more than going through them, fuel cost and time.

Thanks for the replies. I have used truckmiles.com and it is not bad. The best routing is from PCmiler. Part of the problem is the crazy route he wants me to take. When I left NJ I wanted to get up to 80 and head west. I know the route and it is straight forward. Instead he sent me through Philly and I paid almost $40.00 to cross the bridge. Crazy traffic and slow. I finally got the Garmin to route me to Bloomington/Normal. Once I turn onto 39 I will just route to Mpls and I will be good to go. BTW: The Gar mon took me into NJ right to the Costco distribution center. I was impressed. I watched a video on entering waypoints on the Garmin but with my big fingers I found it hard to do. You have to enter the waypoint outside the city or it takes you right into the town!

    Good point.

I should have pointed out in my post you need a gps and an atlas.

Generate your route, then touch the interstate or any street on the screen. After it zooms touch the interstate again and hit Go. Choose add as a via point. You can then add multiple via points without adding specific cities or addresses.
