Yeah it's legal as there is no radar detector. It basis speed traps on driver reports.

Phantomalert is an app you can download up your phone or GPS. It alerts you to red light cameras, traffic cameras, and speed traps. It's user supplied, so it's not an actual radar detector, therefore it's legal.

Had to go back to make sure it wasn't me. I don't drive support people off, I just drive them up the wall.

Old thread but what the heck...
All I can say is that I've not purchased a Garmin unit designed for trucks for one reason. That reason being that both of the Garmin units I previously purchased always had the problem of not connecting to a satellite, no signal. I'd put it back under the seat, wait a month and it would acquire a signal... start down the road and it would make it look like you were driving off into the woods, dropping signal yet again. Both unit were naturally out of warranty, seems to be a big problem according to others posting elsewhere about their issues with Garmin. This happened regardless of what vehicle I put them into... just got to be very annoying. So one night while on my way home, I tossed them out the window and have never thought of them again.
Now with that said, I've looked at the ones for trucks and I really like what I've seen so far. But I'm not swayed to buy one just yet. -
Mine's held signal just fine for three years and still going. Much better than the rand unit does.

I think the guy was legit, there are some suggestions on here that I would have to believe made it into new production units.
