Hey there all you experienced truckers! My partner and I are looking at a Career Shift and OTR Trucking came up as a serious option. We both love drive and see the country.
We don't have any family/home commitments and are happy to be on the road 24/7. We also have ZERO experience and understand the training/gaining experience curve.
Our goal is to spend a few years on the road and make as much money as possible.
With all of this in mind can anyone offer some advice on where to begin? What type of Trucking would serve us best? Training, etc...
All advice is appreciated. PM are ok.

Welcome to the forum, some nice folks around here will be able to answer all your questions.

Hi and welcome. I came to the forum with no experience and looking for answers. I suggest that you first use the search feature and read the MANY threads on getting into trucking. I also suggest you read the threads on the various companies.
I have no idea about "gay friendly" as I know a number of gay teams and solo drivers that are just "drivers". I team drive with my husband and I would think it would be the same thing as far as teaming.
Anyway........I suggest you start there, you're bound to get a ton of advice and both the happy and grumpy will be beneficial to you..
Good luck! If there's anything I can do to assist you please don't hesitate to ask.simplyred1962, LavenderTrucker, Blue Screen and 1 other person Thank this. -
OMG NOT another "Gay Friendly Trucking Company" wanna know! There is already one thread going about this. Do a search and find it and read whats already been said! When you join any threads and forums they ALL have a search function to keep the repetitive questions from being asked but apparently this forum has a problem with it.
Now for this stupid question:
This is a HARD question to answer, No pun intended.
You want to be gay be gay but the best advice is "DON'T ASK DON'T TELL!"
You ask that question while doing an application and it just might make it to the bottom of the pile and live there until it rots away. Seriously. Don't bring that stupid lifestyle up while interviewing or in orientation!
There are stil too many drivers with the "kill em all and let god sort them out attitude"!
These companies really don't care about your social life. Only if it interfers with the safe operaton of their equipment. I've seen butt kickings given to "good buddies", I've seen truck and trailer damages done to "outed gays" from the not so left group and even heard all the rederick on the CB.
Be gay all you want but do not expect the majority of drivers to run to you with open arms! Most of us could give a craploa and really don't want to know how you swing differently!
Be gay all you want, but the best advice is keep it to your self! Hold hands at the mall not the truck stop!
And that's MY opinion. It's a stupid lifestyle and can be offensive to people you really don't want to meet on the dark side of a truck stop to both you and your equipment!SprkPlug62, Logan76 and lonewolf4ad Thank this. -
Well, this will get a few jokes, but my mom works with Swift, and she has 2 friends who are gay, only 1 drives, the other is just a full time passenger, and I have seen a few others. I would say all the companies are gay friendly, you dont have to tell them you are, its none of their business, dont make a big deal out of it and you wont have any problems.
Alot of people assume, wrongly, when they see 2 guys in a truck or 2 women in a truck that theyre automatically gay anyways so, whatever

Thanks for the reply's, yes NANA i've been reading so much over the last few days on the site and I have learned a lot and enjoyed so many of your posts.
ROLLOVER, I appreciate the input and all the puns, however, maybe you could offer a link to the other thread or better yet offer some advice on how to use the search feature as I've been searching for the last two days and nothing comes up.
Thank you all for your answers and sincere welcome any further info would be appreciated.simplyred1962, Texas-Nana, LavenderTrucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
As a lesbian, I understand your asking about "gay friendly" companies.. There are those who don't understand your concerns and question, and a few that will be idiots, but they are not the majority. There are those like Rollover the original who find it offensive, but I'm sure there are those who find Rollover offensive as well,
I had one bad experience when I was running with a jerk of a guy who was training me. He made allot of derogatory comments and bs about knowing what "a lesbian needs".. I sure that is nothing unfamiliar to you... However, I was able to get off his truck and now it is all behind me...
I am not sure weather you are male or female, but, one thing you may want to think about or consider is having one of you start first and get trained and experience, then have the other. Whoever went first may even be able to train the latter and therefore avoid some of the unpleasant training experiences.
The one thing that I have realized about the trucking industry is that it doesn't matter as much whether you are male or female, gay or straight. It is about your MVR, DAC and work history. It isn't like in the non-trucking world where you will be fired for being gay, or find it difficult to get a job as a woman. I am pulling a flatbed, they don't care that I am a woman as long as I can do the job.. Tarp my loads and drive the truck safely from the shipper to the receiver.
Here on the forum, there are those who don't approve or accept your sexuality and want you to just keep it to yourself and don't shove it in their face.. Now, why they are drawn to threads with the word gay or homosexual when they want nothing to do with it feel you are shoving it in their face even though they could just ignore the thread I haven't figured out yet. I am not into hunting and don't want to talk about it or read about it so I just ignore any threads about hunting and don't feel compelled to tell them my thoughts or views on it or tell them to just keep it to themselves and stop putting dead animal heads on walls or wearing camouflage in the city...
good luck and welcome to the forum..simplyred1962, Texas-Nana, Gearjammin' Penguin and 3 others Thank this. -
In answer to some of your questions:
Check into schools at the local community college level.
Check what jobs are available in your area.
Driving jobs in that part of the state are few and far between.
However, with hometime not being an issue, opens some doors for you.
I think all companies are friendly, some more than others perhaps.
There are driving schools in Tampa and Miami, not sure of your area.
Best of Luck !!!Last edited: Feb 17, 2010

Maybe Rollover is offensive to some but I believe his point is correct in why should we even be considering your sexuality when it comes to driving a truck. I do not care what you do in your off time and it's none of my business. What I do care about is if you and your partner can drive a truck or not. I go along with "don't ask don't tell" and let the world go around.
