Well alot of companies love teams so finding a job should be easy, provided you have clean MRV, Work History, Criminal history. Although living in FL might be a problem.

As far as money goes teams "can" make more then solo's. From what I've read on this forum couples teaming is the best way to go as all the money is going to one house hold.

As far as what kind of trucking, teams have all the same options, Dry vans, Reefers, tankers, and Flat beds. But if you looking for money flat bedding probably isn't the way to go, because alot of the freight is construction related and construction is slow right now.

Reefers arnt affected as bad by recessions because people always need food. But have longer wait times to load and unload. And you have the noise of the reefer unit, but if a reefer keeps you up trying to sleep while the truck is moving isn't gonna be fun.

I don't know anything about tankers sry

as far as who to look at, when my dad started trucking he was teaming for swift and makeing pretty good money, but this was back in 2002 or 2003. I would suggest looking around the forum just pick a company look at there dac on this forum and if they sound good check out there website and talk to a recruiter to see if they hire teams.

For training community colleges are usually the cheapest and have the best training. I myself went through a private school and I think they did a decent job. Just don't go to a Company for training you don't want to get stuck in a contract!

    Good Luck!

JRY I don't question you and your partner's abiltiy to learn to drive. What the problem is if the two of are open about your Sexuality at T/S's you are putting yourselves in physical danger. There are those who would at the very least beat the both you badly at best. At worse the two of you could end up like the kid in Wy that was murdered for being gay. My belief is what two consenting adults behind closed doors should stay behind closed doors, regardless of how wrong I think it is.

Nobody starting out or even at it as much as a year is going to get "the best" money or "the best " company . Pay rates for inexperienced teams are the same as they were in the 70's .
You will be pressured to lease purchase . Avoid that . Stay away from carriers like CR. England and Knight .
Pay attention to Lavender Trucker's advice to not jump into it together . She is gaining valuable experience training with an experienced driver but her posts show the wrong codriver can make things difficult . Two inexperience drivers beginning teaming will be the blind leading the blind .
If you get the miles you should there won't be much companionship on the road . Any hours not in the sleeper have to be logged on duty . Riding in the passenger seat is on duty , not driving . You need to be in the sleeper at least 8 consecutive hours .
There is an association for Women In Trucking . Maybe someone short start an organization for gay truckers . I wouldnt suggest putting big decals on trucks but it would be helpful in finding jobs , codrivers , etc .

American Trucker - Thank so much for all the insight. Lots of great info and solid guidance.

Rick G - Thanks again as well. Both of us are business professionals and understand discretion but as was mentioned in another thread we're simply looking to avoid any pit falls if we can.

Thanks again for all the helpful insights.

What most of us are telling you to avoid another "pit fall" just keep your sexuality to yourselves. I believe and hope that the majority of the drivers out there don't care what you do in the privacy of your home or anywhere else for that matter. I know I don't care and I wouldn't want to hear about it in the truck just like I don't want to hear about a guy scoring the night before or whatever. Sure once you get to know people you can keep it light if you choose but again it's nobody's business but your own.

So if I were you I'd approach the job as a team and just keep an eye out for anyone that might be prejudicial and make a note of their inappropriate behavior. I know my company would not allow any distinction of a driver but sorry we do not hire anyone without 2 years tanker experience. But I do believe that you'll find major corporations more in line with liberal thinking than a smaller one. But then again the major corps. are the one that treat all their drivers equally crappy.

The ironic thing about your post is that is what gay individuals are looking for and mean when they ask about a "gay friendly" company... A company where it does not matter if you are or aren't... It has nothing to do with wanting to hold hands and skip through the parking lot..

Not all companies are like that... some are run by or employ individuals with strong views, either religious or personal against homosexuals.

Why it is so hard for some of you to grasp that I have a right to be me, to be who I am, and your views whether religious or personal cannot take that away. I respect your right to your views, and even if you believe my sexuality is wrong, that is fine with me, I am not going to try to change your views or force you to accept my sexuality. I treat you with respect and can still get along and even be friends, because even though I am gay and you are against it, we still probably have allot in common. I do expect to also be treated with respect.

There are '"gay friendly" companies, just as there are "gay friendly' churches... as well as companies and churches that are not 'gay friendly'... There are even businesses that are "gay friendly" and here where I live, we have a directory of "gay friendly" businesses, churches and all. I use those businesses. I know that the plumber who is going to come into my and my partners home will treat us with the respect we deserve, our real estate agent as well, even the car dealer ship we buy our cars from and our travel agent. I spend my money at "gay friendly" business over those that are not. Because I don't like dealing with the ignorance and bs that can and does happen at non gay friendly businesses. You straight couples don't experience it, so I imagine that is where you lack of understanding comes from.

But, imagine this.... You and your spouse go to a car lot to buy a car. The salesman approaches you and you tell him what you are looking for. You are there to buy a car, but the salesman is more interested in and curious about you relationship.. you even notice him talking to other salesmen about the two of you.... then he even tells you he thinks it's a turn on and has always wanted to watch a couple... you know.. have sex...

You can't imagine that can you... I am sure you would do what my partner and I did when that did actually happen to us... We left and took our business else where... a gay friendly place where we as a couple would be treated just as you and your spouse would be.

So, when gay individuals are asking for "gay friendly" companies they are looking for company where it won't be an issue.. or for input from other gay individuals about positive or negative experiences that they have had with a company.

I don't expect a company to be accommodating to my sex life. I expect a company to be accommodating in these areas:
    1) Accepting that I want my company-provided life insurance policy to be paid to my partner of 18 years if anything happens to me.

    2) Accepting that she is also my emergency contact person.

    3) Understanding that while our daughter is technically my kid, my partner and I have raised that girl together for 18 years and we would both need emergency family leave if something dreadful happened -- my partner may not be the biological mom but she will be right there beside me if the kid needs us.

    4) Giving us the same perks that they give any other husband/wife team since they use us in the same manner
I don't know why you guys get all worked up about other people's sex-lives. Asking if a company is gay friendly has nothing at all to do with a person's sex-life. It has to do with their life... all they want to know is if a company is going to treat them right concerning the boring humdrum areas of life that everyone wants to be handled properly. How is that any different from what you all look for in a company?

Oh! Please! Everyone everywhere already thinks you're straight. You advertise it every minute of every day... or rather you don't have to advertise it because it's just assumed.

So this happens fairly often... I'm talking to someone and they ask me if my husband drives, too. What am I supposed to do to avoid "running around advertising" my shameful gayness? Should I lie and say yes? Should I pretend that I went temporarily deaf and missed the question? Should I just start drooling and pretend I just had a stroke and am therefore unable to answer the question?

I just wish someone from the quit-running-around-advertising-your-horrible-gayness camp would give me some advice on how to answer the most basic and simple questions people ask all the time. I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to drool and fake a seizure.

    What do you recommend?
