So I'm taking a risk here. I know there is a lot of homophobia in the trucking industry. I just so happen to be a gay student and I'm wondering what to expect...from either str8 or gay drivers. I think I'm going to be working for Trans Am when I'm done with school...even though I'm not a dress wearing cross dresser, some people can pick me out as being gay. Has anyone out there trained a new driver who turned out to be gay? Or any gay drivers out there get a homophobic trainer? Some people have told me to talk to the recruiting office to let them know...others have said to just keep my mouth shut and deal with it for a few weeks.

Why would you even bring your sexual preference to the workplace? Maybe if you kept your private life private the problem of homophobia would be such a problem.

Yup your right..... homophobia is rampant among the gay trucking community.

Personally, I wouldn't announce I was gay to a recruiter. Just grin and bear it (no pun intended). You'll have your own truck and radio soon enough. This is trucking....not meet a mate. Get over yourself.

When in the hell did ANYONE'S sexual preferance become an issue dealing with anything? The only people creating homophobic atmospheres in this world...are the homo's themselves.

Personally, I don't care if you do farm animals..I just don't want to discuss it with you at any time, nor do I want you discussing it with my family...and I **** sure don't want to see it on the 6 o'clock news.

Gas, you and Dan694u have got to be two of the most level headed people who ever post on this board (except Burky of course!) You guys have yet to say anything that I'd ever disagree with. I wouldn't doubt that there are some gays in our industry but who knows since most people would have the common sense to not mention it. Gays are still mostly considered a laughing stock in our business.

Did you really need to phrase it like that?

Okay let's behave like adults here.... this is not exactly the most proper or considerate way to address the issue.... We can behave more correctly than this.

Name calling and stereotyping is best left to playground bullies and I KNOW we all left that behind years ago, right?

I believe we had a thread addressing women with men trainers, so evidently sexuality CAN be an issue.

Gas, danc, and Rex? You're all about my age, and I certainly hope your attitude isn't typical of my generation. The guy asked his question respectfully, and I would hope that we could answer similarly.

As a female trucker I can say that there are discriminatory truckers out there as well as non discriminatory truckers. Be professional, and dont let the negatives influence you enjoyment of the job. They are out there, and they try their best to make your life miserable. Its our choice whether to allow them to affect us or not.
Good luck in your trucking career Boyrobbie74!
