i am building a single axle refrigerated van, dealer has me in a gear ratio of 5.63 and axle config of 10,000 front 23,000 rear. meritor wide beam truck weight distribution without the reefer box is 6900/4200. truck i am replacing is 12,000 front and 21,000 rear.(33,000) also changed from sfa to sba. does this sound right? should i have the lower front axle for the stronger rear? truck grade ability at this gear ratio is 48.04%/2.42%@55mph

I wouldn't think having a heavier rear axle will compensate for having a lighter front axle. Not sure what the regs are in the US but a single drive axle is only legal to I believe 9100kg/20,000lbs in western Canada.

    325hp Cummins isb
I know my 12k front 21 rear had been ok for a 24ft box.. I just don't know if a 10k/ 23 k config is that much of a difference to worry about

Why do you say 150 because of the gears? It's 325hp for a little box truck. I have 3.90 gears on a 350hp and it's a dog down low

I'd think as long as you push that rear axle forward a bit to make sure you aren't ending up heavy on the steer you'd be fine.

Would it hurt to put a 12k steer and a 23k rear? I'd rather overbuild a bit than feel like I'm gonna be whooping on something...I sure there's a difference on the price tag.

Good Lord, upgrade to the ISC 8.3. You will not regret it over the B 6.7

Do you really need more power in a little straight truck?

    Reg it lower?
Id rather have more truck than I need than save $8k and break something.

I have a 10 wheeler @ 475horse. Rarely over 33k gross & it's gotta be at least 22 tare. It's real laggy compared to my road tractor.

If you are buying it, and you are driving it: I don't think there's such thing as too much power.

    drdesl Thanks this.
