Gear Ratio Confusion

    I know what your getting at there. Does kind of depend how crappy the tires are on the chassis. Very true. Nothing to learn there. I see them going down the road all the time. Some of them look good to go fast while others are only good for slow and steady. My trailer is super nice with nearly new tires and it's permanently attached to my truck so I will have to get used to making the call of how fast I can go when I make the switch.

    Hello, how would this ratio be 3:21. 10 speed DD13? Have 22.5 super singles and mainly just go Kentucky to Chicago. Looking at a truck that is at a good price . But not sure how the set up will work with fuel economy? Thank you for your help

    The newer dd, fuel economy wise, dont like over 1500 rpm. Thats the break point to you make more money going slower.

    Shifting is a pain, going slow is a pain, having to drive all those miles at 65 instead of 72 and losing an hour a day is frustrating beyond belief.

    @65 you will save $6000 in fuel or make an extra $24 per hour for sitting in that truck an extra hour. That doesnt include any gains from lower maintenance or added longevity.

    @55 mph my head would explode and my schedule is tighter than that. But you would save even more.

    Business is only about efficiency.

    Speed is a personal want and its not good for business even remotely.

    How everybody balances that is an each to their own decision...

    But everytime a w900 goes flying by me at 75 i wonder if the guy can do math, owns his home, has a nice personal vehicle, a stuffed ira or 401k, and if he is current on his child support... lol

    Dont get me wrong... i'd love to pass his sorry ### in my, well lit, 389 that i dont own. it just doesnt pencil out for me.

    The first part is incorrect as a blanket statement.
    Do what’s best for your business. It’s not the next mans business you need to worry about; unless you want to do what they are doing, and be who they are.

    Ruthless is correct. I would like to add, one of the best things about owning your equipment is that you can spec. and set-up your Rig anyway you want. Efficiency is not a blanket to throw over the entire industry. Making your equipment efficient for your work is what puts extra dollars in your pocket. Running NYC everyday or line hauling the coast requires different equipment to maximize efficiency.

    You possibly have made the point i just made. There is different equipment for different jobs to maximize efficiency.

    Business is about maximizing efficiency, squeezing the most profit out, that you can get. That's capitalism and business.

    If you like 389 or w900 by all means do it.
    And yes, you can drive it coast to coast or straight up over the rockies at 75mph.

    But you will get there with less money in your pocket than the guy in the cascadia. And if you slow down to 62 he might even beat you there and still have more money than you.

    In very limited instances will throwing fuel out the pipes let you make the proverbial extra run to even break even with an aero truck.

    Lots of guys doing the glider... i penciked that out also... same deal, spend extra avoid the def, rationalize, and still not make the money the cascadia does.

    Dont want a cascadia... i am fine with it. I dont want the one i have... and am thinking pete. last truck before retirement... splurge and enjoy the ride. Will not touch the money the cascadia makes.
    Shippers dont pay extra for chrome. I wish they did. But on this side of the coin its about what i want and not so much efficiency...

    My old FLD would be on the governer at 72 with the 500+ detriot at about 1650ish give or take 50 depending on where in the USA. It was a 2100 RPM engine so you could snort her if you needed to on a rockwell 9 short. That was governed at 72, otherwise if you needed to pull you shifted down one time and redlined it. That usually took care of most hills.

    The Evolution I drive now has a setup with 10sp OD and 3.25 rears, on 22.5lp.

    5mph per 100 engine rpm in high gear, taller than the 2013, which had same trans and 3.42 rears.


    I put a fair amount of miles on a 2001 ddecIV ten speed direct with 2.64 gears, 22.5lp tires, same effective gearing as the 2013 above. I believe the Evolution will do better on fuel than the 12.7 did.
