    We always ran the slightly taller gear in the front end. Helped the truck be less squirrelly since the front was slightly pulling the rear. So 3.54 front, 3.55 rear, and so on. 4.10/4.11, 3.07/3.08...

    Those numbers are rounded off to the nearest hundred tho. It's not a noun [thing], it's a mathmatical calculation.
    EX ,4.1-1 and 4.10-1 are essentially the same.
    And the taller.
    thinner ring gear is the faster gear in terms of speed.
    The shorter thicker ring gear is the quickest gear.
    I think I said that right.

    It’s more of an indirect drive versus a direct drive or overdrive.

    The way the word pairings on rear end ratios went was :
    Lower (numerically) = taller gears
    Higher = shorter gears

    Not sure on the origin of using taller/shorter, but if I had to guess it came from people having a better intuitive grasp on the effects of different sizes of tires on top speeds.

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.

    I just had a shaft built last week. All new parts patterned off the old one. Picked it up from the shop Friday. It is at least 25-30 lbs heavier than the old one. Thicker wall tube because of what you just mentioned. The shop just does it automatically now because they see more twists now then ever. Due to fast gears and higher torque ratings. They’ve been building them for 50 years and the number one guy who’s been there at least 30 says it’s crazy and Spicer is looking into building a bigger series joint and yoke due to this problem. 6” or 7” tube in the future anyone?

    Back in 1980 my friend had a gmc general, 8v92 with a 13 speed with a 4 speed auxiliary, never did run out of gears on the top side, probably could have hit 100 and still had 13 gears left.

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.
