I was just wondering about one aspect of home time in general. I see a lot of companies talk about trying to get you back 3-4 weeks, or whatever their policy may be. If I want to stay out longer are you able to rack up the days and take them at once, or will you always be stuck with a day or two at home at most?

My wife is a teacher and as everyone knows, gets a lot of time off. I'm looking at staying out 6-8 weeks minimum to try and rack up some days and basically take a vacation with her when she has them. I figure it won't always work out timing wise, but I'd rather be home for a longer time than more often. Will this be possible?

I stay out 4 to 5 months, my choice. When i go home i usually stay home 7 to 10 days, also my choice. Depends on your company and how they respect the drivers time off for work done.

I usually stick with about a month or so out at a time. Then take 4-5 days off. I guess a reasonable amount of hometime is 1 day per week that you're out.

Of course it all depends on your company. If you want to stay out for 3 months at a time, then take 2 weeks or so off, you may end up turning in the truck while you're off. If this is something you want to avoid, you should try and find out what a decent amount of hometime is. Again this depends if your company even cares about it.

To answer your question I think that seems reasonable. Stay out 6-8 weeks at a time and then take a week or so off.

Thanks, I figured it comes down to a company specifically, but was just wondering how it is generally.

Definitely possible! My wife and I drove team and would sometimes stay out for three months then go on a two week vacation somewhere. We were owner operators though. Most companies are going to start to get "itchy" if you take more than a week because they own the truck and that truck isn't making any money sitting at your house. After a year or so of driving if you want to buy a truck it would be more feasible to take long periods of time off. Of course then YOU have to pay for the truck while at sits at your house. Your best bet, get your wife her license! My wife and I team drove and made quite good money. We are no retired. I am 35 years old!

Only a week off would be fine, that's really what I'm looking for anyways.

And my wife has this problem with wrecking into big trucks in a four wheeler. I don't want to see what kind of damage she can cause when she's behind the wheel of the big truck lol.

In all seriousness, it may end up happening. She didn't lose her job this year but was very close to the cutoff hiring date that was let go. Things aren't looking any better this year. Luckily her district was already completely poor and broke when things were good in CA so they were already used to it. They laid off 16 when the neighboring cities of similar size had 95 and 182 teachers cut.

Its that way in Florida too! You guys should seriously consider doing it together. It took me some time and convincing but my wife eventually gave in. She was really glad she did too! She now owns her own horse training facility due to team driving!
