Okay, the radio is back! Kelly worked miracles.
    Before:
    Squelch knob rotated 360 degrees
No modulation limiters, so it splattered and sounded terrible, including talk back audio.
Even with noise-cancelling mics, easily squealed with talkback on external speaker that works fine on all my other radios.
When I tested it with my handheld radio, the General would squeal on RX even though I was standing over 10 feet away from the car with the handheld....my other radios would be fine receiving from the handheld even in the car! Couldn't handle close-in signals at all. (Didn't have apparent problems receiving further away signals).

    After:
All problems above fixed, plus installed a red S/RF meter LED to match red channel selector. He also reversed the TX/RX LED so it was red during RX, making it homogeneous with meter LED and channel display, and it turns green on TX. Cleaned potentiometers.

Cost was $60 for work, and $24 for insured return shipping from Nevada to Illinois. No regrets. He salvaged this General Lee from the hack who worked on it before.

I have five mobile units and a handheld unit. I also have three external antennas, and one more antenna on the way right now. I need to stop acquiring more! When I go on road trips with friends, it is nice to be able to throw radios in their vehicles. They don't know anything about CB radio but they do come to appreciate it.

    I've come to really
That's why I love a good magnet antenna. You can utilize the best location on a vehicle without doing any drilling. New cars especially make it hard to get a ground, but the magnet will achieve the ground through capacitance.

Echo is great for telling other people they have too much echo. The other day, some guy was having a casual conversation but his echo was high enough to be really distracting and hard to understand. I waited for a break, and then with my echo almost all the way up, I keyed up and said you're running too much echo. He turned it down and asked it was better. I wonder if he would've complied had I not had echo....

Ha! Good technique! I like to use just a little, where it's basically just reverb. Just to fatten the sound a little.

When someone's echo is too high I tell them to turn down the "hillbilly knob".

Most times what you hear with talk back is not the same as other guy hears...So if you ask them to turn it down and they it will make radio clear up some ,most will go ok tks..The diks well they add echo..

hey yall. just got a brand new cobra 29wx nw st. i havent really tuned it yet or anything but have tinkered with it a couple times. i also have a firestik kw3 trim to tune antenna mounted on my porch roof. not a real open area either. but just as a test i hooked it up and checked theswr on it. and what i found was quite contrary to what i had expected. ch 1 read at 1.3, ch 40 read at 1.2 and ch 20 reads at 1.2 to 1.3. is this common among the first few uses? the antenna is basicall untouched. not trimmed at all. or is there perhaps something to this that i should be aware of? i am also rather new to the knowledge base. so just wanna know if im doing it right lol. thanks guys. hope to get a swift reply.
