    Hello there!

Do owners/operators own both the tractor and trailers or just the tractors and pull whatever trailer you're hired to pull?

I have no idea how this works and I'm just looking for a general idea.

    Thanks!

Some have their own trailer and do everything themselves. Some sign/lease their truck onto a company like Landstar and you can pull their trailers

I have my own trailer, but if it's in the shop for any length of time then I'll look for some "power-only round trip" loads, where you pull the shipper's trailer somewhere and then bring it back. Or a lot of shipping container loads work like that, picking up out of ports and rail yards.

Depends on what you are contracted to do.

Some sectors would encourage you to get your own trailer while some will gladly rent you one of theirs.

The more specific trailers, tankers, walking floors dedicated to one customer, and the like usually belong to the carrier.

Having your own trailer usually nets you more of the gross and may bring you to developing your own customers where you can go on your own.

I would think a lot of refers and skateboards are owned by independents; I had a bunch of guys pulling tanks all mention how they did this or that to their flatbeds and a few still had one out behind the barn. Wasn't enough income for them to keep pulling it and it was old enough that it was paid for to sit while they tried yanking a tank.

Trucking is like a box of chocolates. You never quite know what your going to get.

It varies greatly in this business.
