Hey everyone, heres my dilemma. I have been self employed for the past 4 years and had the same job before that for 7 yrs. Im concerned that my 4 yrs of being self employed is going to look like unemployed, I really dont have any w2s to show, and I know work history is important. The good thing is that i have a spotless driving record for like 10 yrs, not even a ticket. Any advice, I greatly appreciate it.

You have no work history. You got to show something.

Did you file taxes? If so, send for a copy of your returns if you have none. It will take 6-8 weeks for them to get back to you.

    from,
I've just graduated school after having been self-employed for some time. Not only did I have several pre-hires, I was heavily recruited by a carrier or two. The self-employment shouldn't be an issue, as long as you have some way to verify it. You should be able to use past tax returns (Schedule C), professional licenses, etc. to verify the time you were S/E.
    Good luck!

Well if your were self employed for 4 years and were making an income you should have pleny of documentation showing you paying your taxes and social security among other things. Otherwise uncle sam may want to talk to ya :( You should pay your self a wage when your working for yourself and the rest goes to your buisness

Well my X wife had a great job so her incvome justified our living situation, I was officially the stay at home parent. Does that help explain my situation.

The only definitive way to get an answer to this is to talk with a recruiter from whatever company you hope to secure a position with. My guess would be, if you have returns, the amount of money wouldn't matter, the fact is that it showed you were gainfully employed. I would also expect that the explanation of being the stay-at-home parent would help explain things.

If this is the case I would be more worried about the IRS find out that I did not report ALL my earnings.

Yup , if you pass a DOT physical and haven't had a DUI those companies with 125% turnover rate don't worry about past employment .

even if you explain it to the recuritor it does not mean anything as they are there just to get you there. You will have to supply all info again in orentation and if they determine that your work history is unacceptable they will send you packing.

I had issues with my starter company as I was self employed and contracted to a couple of people for my work but the problem was a couple of the places went out of busniess but I had may tax returns and the other place that I was doing contract work was able to be contacted to verify my last 6 months of work history.

They may look at you a little funny with small tax returns.
