Currently a yard hostler, been doing that for 6 months now. The company I work for will pay up to 3,000 dollars for me to go to school. School in the area costs roughly 4200. Would one reccomend going to a company ex. Swift, Knight, CRE, Prime etc. Or just pay out of pocket to get my CDL?
Get my CDL through a company or local school

Better for you to pay your own way if you can. You don't want to have to commit to working for one of those bottom feeders if you don't have to.

I would either continue what you're doing, or take advantage of the offer and go to a private CDL school.
If you go through company CDL school, you have to work it off, which means eating all of their BS until that year is up. I made it 8 months and owe the balance.
It's worth it to me though. Even with only 8 months experience, it took me only 2 days to find a local driving job, and I live in an area where jobs aren't what I'd call abundant.
Good luck.zepp3214 Thanks this. -
The company you work for now will pay $3K for you to attend cdl school. What's the deal with that? Do they want you to work for them afterwards?
Where is your location; maybe there's some other ideas floating around.Odin's Rabid Dog Thanks this. -

Plenty of good jobs that hire Oregon new cdl graduates.
Space Age Fuel is one of a dozen or more. If you pay for the cdl school yourself, they'll reimburse the tuition back to you.

One thing to consider, if you go home the local schools a lot of times they are negotiable on the charge. If it's not a nationwide training school, or done through University I would be very surprised if they didn't compromise to 3500 or even 3,000 if you offered to pay it upfront.
