I can agree with the OP. All I ask of an employer is treat me with respect and pay on time without shorting my pay. Whether you call me by name or truck number I don't care.

As a newbie...How is it different from the non trucking world?? We are all just a number out here. Welcome to Corporate America. Trucking is not the only profession that has stagnant wages, crappy working conditions and corporate ########. Its happening to all professions. If you find one that it hasnt, just wait, they are on the list to destroy next....

I wonder if it annoyed the driver number guys at the Werner yard in Laredo when I waltzed in with my non company truck, hooked up to a loaded trailer and left while they sit there till Monday.

I think the magic number is about 25-30 drivers. Get much larger than that and you lose the personal relationships.

My company runs about 600 trucks. My home terminal is under 30. They know the sound of my voice and are actually working with me while my wife is getting radiation treatments for breast cancer. I generally run the system but for the past couple of months have been given nothing but 3 day out and back dedicated loads. I did not ask for special treatment but they saw what I was going through and just did it. That goes a long way in my book.

When I get out into the system and deal with the other terminals they always need a driver number. I am a number to them.

If anyone wants their hand held or someone to sing "Kumbaya" with, this is the wrong industry. Professional drivers have their own lives, drive for their own reasons, and it comes with expectations by all concerned, shippers, receivers, drivers. Whether you're an O/O, company driver, I/C, you pick up loads from shippers and deliver them to consignees, on time and in good condition. Everything else is secondary. If you can do that, you're as good as anybody. I love having breakfast at the local cafe, pork chops and eggs, coffe and pie. I do that when I'm on home time.

The reason large corporations are absorbing small business is called "economy of scale." They can buy in bulk, track costs, pay accountants and lawyers, fund their own insurance companies, and a lot more money saving methods of business that just aren't available to small outfits. There's always work for good drivers who pick up and deliver on time.

I work for a company with 50 or so trucks and it is nice to walk into our main terminal and everybody from the owner of the company to the girl working on the second floor in the way in the back corner cubicle knows your name. I also know that if I quit the company wont collapse.

Great advice! My FM acts like he's my friend (most of the time) but he changes his tune in a heartbeat as soon as he doesn't get his way with me. Nope, trucking companies may act all "nice nice" but never consider anyone on the inside (except maybe the drivers you meet) your "friend".

It's all about the dollar as you say. And the flip side is, if we weren't getting paid by them we wouldn't be caring about them as well. Business is business.
