I am 21 and have no job history, not even with a fast food restaurant. That isn't to say I've been sitting around on my butt all these years though, I've been doing some mechanic work and am on the road quite often hauling cars two and three at a time. I just can't prove it other than a phone call. Other than the lack of job history, I have no dui's, accidents or any road infractions of any kind and plan on keeping it that way. I have no criminal or drug history either. If I paid for CDL school (I've read about these company sponsored schools, I'm not inclined to be contracted to anyone like that), are there any companies that would hire me right out of the box?

Where do you live/state.? Sure you can get a job, but you will need notorized letters from family or friend or those you did work for that you were unemployed and looking for full time work or working for cash doing odd jobs. You must account for that time from age 18 until starting CDL school.

You are on the right track by having a clean record.
    1) no criminal record
    2) no history of ever having used drugs
    3) no DUI's or DWI's
    4) clean motor vehicle record (MVR)

    Suggestion:
Find a job, (preferably a full time job), for the next 3 to 4 years. This way you will have a bona fide work history on file. Afterwards, go to a decent truck driving school and take it from there. Those 3 to 4 years will go by quickly.

    GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!

Millis Transfer has an excellent CDL school for $500.00 and some of the best reviews on here from drivers. Drivers average $50K annually.

It that doesn't interest you, then community college or private CDL school will give you many more opportunites to choose from. Get the endorsements, especially hazmat.

I was in the same boat when i started, No real work history to speak of. Here is what i did.
Got myself into Roadmaster here in Columbus, Ohio. I applied for every driving company out there trying to get pre-hires from anyone. Which i got 2-3 back. Dont get me wronge, with no work history AND being a new driver your first year is going to suck. a few months or more with a trainer making crap pay, then even once your on your own learning the ropes and getting lost, getting shafted by dispatchers being the new guy. It just wont be fun. You need to be prepaired for this. After your first year of how ever many accident free miles you get, there will be OTR companys fighting for you.

If you have time, and arent in a hurry to rush into it a previous driver was on the right track. Get a job, not trucking, work there a few years and establish a history. this will help you land with a better company once you go through CDL school.

But no matter how you choose to go, Dont expect to get rich, or have the best job as a new driver. The first year is always rough but if you can otugh it out. Its a fun gig.
    GOOD LUCK

He mean's that the cost you have to pay up front is $500, not the entire schooling. If you go to school at Millis and get hired on by them, you don't have to pay them back (as long as you meet the requirements of agreement/contract). Most company-sponsored training you DO NOT have to pay anything up front. Chinatown was just letting him know of the upfront costs. I, too, have heard great reviews about Millis' school.

Sure there are! If there's a will, there's a way. Being that you're 21 years of age is already gunna pose a problem and not having any work experience will, too, pose an even bigger problem, but there will be a company that will take you on. Listen to what Chinatown just told you. Also, before you go investing a lot of money into a school, call companies to see if they will hire you and what they will require from you for your work history; only they can tell you what they want/need. Anyway, best of luck to you!

Yet another reason trucking stinks to get into, you have to go work at McDonalds for three years before you can be "qualified" to drive a truck. INSANE! Does a person going to school to be a nurse have to go work at McDonalds for three years to qualify to be a Nurse? Does a Plumber have to go work at Taco Bell for three years before they can be qualified to be a plumber? No! Does a guy who wants to be a welder have to go work at Taco Bell for three years to be a welder? NO! He goes to welding school, then gets a job. It doesn't matter if he hasn't worked for three years or what. Trucking is the most backward out of date industry around, not even considering all the WORK YOU DO FOR FREE for companies. What a racket.
