What about all the immigrants from Russia, Nigeria, and etc coming here and get truck driving jobs after going to school? Do the companies check on their work history back in Russia? Do they call up past employers in Nigeria? I doubt it.

For those saying get a full time job for a couple of years then go to trucking school are flat out nuts. First off...why are you telling this guy to delay the inevitable crappy first year or so? He's most likely not going to get on with a better carrier just because he worked 3 years flipping burgers. The majority of the bottom feeder companies will hire him as is, which would be the same companies he would most likely have to start with since he has no driving experience if he worked for 3 years. He might as well just sign on with a mega carrier now (swift, werner, cr England, stevens...etc) and by the time he's stuck with it and drove for 3 years he will be looking at working for way better carriers. now if he went and flipped burgers he would just be starting at square 1. Just delaying the inevitable. That's my opinion

Actually here's a real simple version now that I think about it. OP...would you like to be making 30K a year in 3 years....or 65K? maybe even more depending on some variables. Let's face it, it always comes down to the money.

The work history is a result of D.O.T. regulations, insurance company requirements, and many of the in house regulations of many trucking companies themselves. I believe a lot of this all started after 911, back in 2001, an extremely tragic time over 12 years ago.

The trucking companies should NOT be hiring immigrants off the street to begin with. It is quite difficult, if not virtually impossible, to check up on an immigrants work history in countries as Russia or Nigeria.

It's relatively easy to purchase a work history with references, phone numbers, etc. in many foreign countries. Can even purchase a clean police report. Most of the information is on the visa request which the US Embassy in the foreign country approves.

Generally if you can give a phone number for who you worked for that will do. The other magic phrase is "I've always wanted to drive truck. I've filled the time between high school and now doing things that will help me be a better driver (ie mechanical work/education, etc)".

If you've had a stable home address, and your record is clean there's no reason you won't land an OTR job. Haven't you heard - there's a driver shortage?

I was in the same position as you were. I went with Conway and they didn't bother calling my only job reference which was my uncle.

Yeah I figured I'd have to get on with a crappy megacarrier anyway. They seem to pick anyone else up off the street, I don't see why they'd care at a sparse background. Anywho, I'm a very patient person and willing to work through the problems that seem to get dumped off on newbies.
