I’m looking at getting back into driving at the beginning of next year. I was in an accident in 2012 that caused nerve damage in my back but I believe I can handle driving again. But that means I do not have recent verifiable experience. I have kept my license and just got my new one with Hazmat on it.
Driving experience.
I did dirt hauling for a year driving a set of bottom dumps, then moved into tankers hauling fuel for about 8 years. All of this was in the SF bay area. I have not done OTR but would do line work by going from San Jose to Fresno and back fairly often with a load of Jet fuel.
Location
I’m in Tooele UT 84074 but my wife and I are thinking about moving to Idaho and are open to other places with a low crime rate and reasonable housing with nice-looking land.
What I’m looking for.
1) Decent pay. $65+ (I know I’ve been out for awhile but $65,000 should be on the low end for any driver. I presently work 40h a week at $20h at my desk job.)
2) Medical benefits (no 1099)
3) Passenger allowed (My wife has her CDL but is not ready to start yet. I would like her to be able to ride with me.)
4) Pet policy (2 cats)
5) Home time for now (We want to ultimately drive team, get rid of the rental and save up for a house.)
6) Not too hard on the back.
I enjoyed tankers but I can learn to do just about anything.
I’ve been doing research here but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for us to get started?
Once we have some recent verifiable experience what are some companies we should be working towards? Our goal is to be making around $100k each at a company that we want to stay with.

Your request is kind of steep don't ya think? This accident you were in, not your fault was it? If not you might have a chance to get an ok job but i doubt 6 figure job. However, you may be lucky, you never know. You'll be lucky to have 6 months experience OTR and will be applying just like everyone else. Good luck and let us know.

Nothing on my record as far as DMV. A $100k is for after I get some recent verifiable experience. I was making close to that before and looking at the boards there are plenty that do it. Especially doing teams and staying out.
I don't think $65,000 is steep for getting back in a truck. If I could sling hoses all day I would be a gas hauler again. Here in SL area new guys are around $80k+ and one company driver was at just over $100k. Are things different in NV?FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
The $100K for each team driver is achievable with line haul companies such as Old Dominion, Estes Express, R&L Carriers.
There's teams with Salt Lake Trucking Group in Salt Lake City which also has a cdl school where you can get a refresher course. This outfit also has team freight and FedEx team freight.

Sweet. Thanks Chinatown. I had not heard of Salt Lake Trucking Group in my research. This gives me more to look into. I like to find a good job and just stay there until there is a reason to leave. If I can get away with only working for one or two more companies that would be great.
I think the wife may love the cats more than me. I’ll be looking into Shaffer & Crete & Celadon as well. -
Everyone talks about pay. No one mentions expenses on the road. Food and such alone would be around 8000 a year.
Also there is matter of inflation. 32000 in the 80's is very good money and then 100K today is doing just ok.
trainee drivers have a couple hundred thrown at em each week if they have not been advanced or fronted that money...
Never mind the time off road as long you account for all time. For example if it was me going back 10 years on paper one sentence. Medical patient fixing broke stuff. The previous driving will show itself in good quality once we get the rig moving. The worries would be on my end against the employer. No driver facing camera (I'll bring a go pro or something...) and so on.Texas_hwy_287 Thanks this. -
