I want to get back into trucking after a 10 yr sabbatical, I've been working as a Paramedic for several Ambulance Services. I was wondering the best way to get back into trucking. I've hauled lumber, Milk, Steel, Septic, I have my Class A with tanker endorsement, Am going to get my Hazmat cert as well. Thank you for your suggestions.

Unfortunately with the way trucking is today, you are a green rookie to most companies. Your best bet is to find a small outfit, say under 20 trucks that will hire you. Otherwise, you'll have to take a refresher course at minimum, and you'll still be starting at the bottom with larger companies.

First, find a couple companies you like or would like to work for that hire from your area. Then call their recruiting department, explain what you've been doing, and what they would require to hire you. Then, if they require a refresher course, find a local truck school that does them. I've seen pricing from 500-1500 dollars for it. Find the company first though. Good Luck.

I was out of trucking for a bit over 10 yrs. Did a three week school, drove for that company for three months, only made 27 cpm. Found a regional company, been there 6 months and am making 37cpm, should be up to 40 cpm by the time I have to sling chains. They also pay $125 for every construction site delivery and provide health insurance. Good jobs are out there, you just have to find them.

Some of the mega-carriers offer refresher courses too. I like what the other poster said though, look into the smaller companies. Your chances of success will be much greater.

    Good luck!
