I was wondering if anyone has any advice on which route to go. I drove for 6 months OTR and then some family medical issues forced me to come home. I have been off the road for 2 years now, but still drive for the company I work for now and have actually gotten my HAZMAT & tanker endorsements in that time. I am looking to get back on the road again and have been trying to talk to recruiters.

The question I have is will anyone accept the 2 years of local experience I have on top of my 6 mo. OTR experience? I am not too hot about the idea of riding with a trainer for 3-4 weeks. I don't mind for a week or so to see how there company runs and etc.........BUT MAYBE I AM JUST DREAMING!!!!

Any advice or leads would be appreciated.

    Thanks and be safe!

I don't see why not, just because your driving local doesn't mean your not still driving. Most local jobs around here want 2yrs otr before letting you drive local.. You have a good chance of finding someone who is ort in a tanker with those endorsements, and have a good chance of making better money, then driving a dry van..Also how much $$ do you make now? and is giving up home every night and weekends worth it..

Thanks for replying.....you would think that the local experience would count, but most companies that i have been talking to don't count it. they need 2 years OTR before i can even start with them. I was trying to get on as a tanker driver, but cannot for this reason. also most of the companies that i have spoken with don't even want to talk to me b/c i only have 6 months OTR. i was surprised, but not much i can do i guess.

as far as the $$$ goes....for around here i don't do too bad, but have any extremely dirty and physical job which is OK, but don't probably make what we should....but it is nice to be home at night. just are not making ends meet by doing it. we have muddled over this decision for about 2 months now and the only thing we can come up with is to go back out. sucks to a point, but then again...i miss driving to....

in the end though, it comes down to making the budget and i cannot do that with the $$$ i make now.....

ANY & ALL comments/advice is much appreciated!!! Thanks

Remember one thing, when you do go OTR you must also figure in what it will cost you to live in your truck.. Now if your smart and do what most do,you will stay away from the TS, and load up your truck with plenty of food to last you a few weeks. Now this can be hard especially if you don't have a good freezer, microwave oven or even a coffee pot.. You might want to see what you can find around town as far as another co goes that might pay more...

I always took food for the week when i drove before. i don't have the option of looking for something else around town. i live in a very rural area and there is nothing else around except for maybe grain hauling.
