You are allowed however to drive a basic car etc with one eye provided you have a range of 105 degrees side to side etc.
Ive had a cataract surgery that was a success almost 10 year ago. Waiting for the other eye to go. Once that happens a second surgery will be needed. I have too many verified hard diagnoses that goes against getting a Medical Long form needed to get a CDL again, both are now tied together. If YOU HAD not given up your CDL you would have been other than Tier One meaning grandfathered and not tied to a Medical card.
If I needed a CDL myself today, I will have to do this from the bottom up starting with clearing the drugs out of my system long enough to pass those tests employers will require plus regain the necessary beef to get past the DOT doctor. That's not going to happen for me. Im out to pasture.
Even if your surgery is good and your vision is restored to minimum FMCSA and CDL Requirements to get one, you will find that you will be made to endure a refresher or treated as a newbie all over again. (That should not take too long if you still have handling a 18 wheeler in you... )
Even then the industry has changed in so many ways. It's very hard now to get and keep a CDL and not get trapped in any number of things that can put you right back home unemployed all over again.
Part of being treated as a newbie is having a cdl, valid medical etc and trying to get into orientation etc with one year experience etc. You would think no one will be hired at all... at some point.
I suspect the insurance companies etc has clamped down on what the driver needs, and also it is easier to be a immigrant or even worse sign papers promising repay upwards of 10,000 dollars to a company that "trained you" the first year provided. (Indentured servitude... from the 1700's all over again)
Because you sign that debt note free will, the 13th amendment does not apply. But you scrape the truck somewhere and get wrecked in 90 days, they will simply fire you and hand you the remaining balance of that debt you owe.
Finally I don't yet know the full story, if a doctor has ordered you to surrender your license becuase your vision is essentially blind... that is that. There are people who sometimes are faced with such a doctors orders not to drive anymore. Period.Last edited: May 4, 2018

As long as you can pass a DOT physical, plenty of companies will hire you.
Here's some in Indiana that have their own cdl training. You'll need an Indiana cdl permit also, but call the companies and ask exactly what they want before training starts.
Online Transport - Indy
Sodrel Transportation - Clarksville,IN
Roehl Transport - Gary,IN - hair follicle drug test
Celadon - school probably in Indy
Schneider - Gary,IN (hair follicle drug test)
Carter Express - Muncie,IN
All the above companies hire right off the street, with no cdl or experience.Last edited: May 4, 2018

My vision is fine I just couldn’t take my physical because I had stitches in my right eye and recently passed my physical I am able to see 20/30 in my right eye after the surgery I’m hoping get back on the road shortly and drive again trying to find a decent company that would train me or give me a refresher
