How much importance do trucking companies place on your family situation if you are a beginning driver trying to get hired? Will they give more consideration to a single person with no dependents as opposed to a married person with a bunch of kids at home?

A single person can be desirable under many circumstances, but then too, many single people have wants and needs to, to get home on occasions.
I think that as long as you state up front what home time you need, many companies work with that. But always try to remember, the freight still dictates things. -
Depends on a lot of things. Most companies have a home time policy and they expect you to abide by it (I.e. 3 weeks out 2 off). Don't agree to a companies policy and cry foul when you get in the door. As far as genuine emergencies, I've only had a issue once with a carrier that threatened my job for not leaving a funeral early. On the other hand, when I worked for U.s. xpress, they had me a load heading home within a few hours and bent over backwards to make sure everything was ok with me during transit (I.e. mental state). Using a family obligation or family emergency excuse to work the time off system in your favor will be very short lived at a company.

The brutal truth is this. If you have young children at home that you want/need to be there for, you are getting into the wrong business. Don't mean to sound rude. It's just q fact

If you have any concerns whatsoever with family or home time then you are absolutely barking up the wrong career path! Take some time to research and find something else. You can work 24/7 at home and make more money than being on the road.
The number one reason for newbies quitting this job is the exact question you are asking about.

Well I wouldn't call it an advantage per se. You just don't have the responsibility of a married person with kids. What's point of this thread?

If you don't care about going home then its a awesome career

Some companies look at married/kids as being more responsible VS. a single guy with no responsibilities being more likely to goof off and quit on short notice.
