well it seems the company i work for has allowed a lumper service to set up shop at the warehouse and they are now fleecing drivers for 100 to 300 per load. the driver never had to touch the freight, to start with. what is even more amazing is the fact that, even after i tell
the drivers they do not have to touch anything and they do not have to hire the lumper service they still hire them or they hire them with out ever coming in the warehouse to find out what is required. since monday they have cleared over 1500.00 standing around picking their nose.
it's your money drivers, i would always suggest speaking with the receivers about what is required before you hire a lumper service.
there is more to this story but my 30 min break is up.
(short edit to try and clear a sentence up.)

Good advice! Always check in first to find out what is required. I made lots of money in my reefer days, lumping my own loads. For example, lumper service charged $150.00 to unload 24 pallets of vinegar. Receiver required 1 layer off the top of each pallet. About an hour later I was $150.00 tax free in my pocket. Same deal with butter. Some loads just a straight pull off with no breakdown and make $100.00 or more. The company I worked for didn't care either; said they would rather the driver make a few extra bucks if they wanted to do it.

Has anyone else delivered onions to the produce market in Boston? I've delivered 3 times and never charged the lumper fee. I see everyone else charged but never me. If there are any trucks ahead of me he unloads me before them too. I'm an independent from NH so that's the only thing I can think of. Either it's because I'm an independent or from NH close by. I always give the dock manager $20 bucks and he gives me a 50 pound bag of onions which I trade in for a pizza when I get home.

Something doesn't seem right here. WHO has been doing the unloading, if the driver hasn't? Do you have your company dock workers? How long has this been happening? Sounds to me like something is going on here, and you say there is more to the story. When you get off work, it would be really nice if you'd come back to this thread and expand a bit on what is happening.
With just what you have posted, I can see a couple of scenarios here, neither one of which is very pretty. First off, your company dock workers are about to be no more, and you just haven't been advised yet. (Is that because you will be no more yourself?????)
Second, somebody from the lumper outfit got to somebody in your outfit and slipped them some money, (or made threats against them,) to allow their lumpers to be on the property. If they don't have permission to be there, they are trespassing, and should be shown the gate. With a law enforcement assist if necessary.
If they do actually have permission to be there, then something is wrong.
I hope you've kept your resume polished up!
It ain't the work that's so bad. It's going into and out of those durn cold trailers all day long. That'll give a guy pnewMoniaaa don'tch know. . .gokiddogo Thanks this. -
the way it works at our shop is the company employees unload / break down 95 % of the freight that comes in, but of that 95% most of them are called driver assist even tho we never need the driver to do any thing.
the company hooked up with a lumper company with the pretense that the company is getting a percent of the unloading fees. the company could care less if the lumpers do anything or not as long as they are collecting money
from the drivers. the goal is to make money from every otr driver.
they use a lot of strong arm tactics like telling them they have to bring their own equipment if they want to do it themselves or they are the only ones allowed to unload trucks, telling them there is break down when there is none.
had a driver today that had to push his way into the building to get to a receiver.
BTW : i have no concern about my job or anyone else's disappearing.Big Don Thanks this. -
Sounds like your company is committing fraud against the drivers, trying to get them to pay extra for unnecessary service. And now, you've put this practice on the interwebs so there is a trail f evidence when a victim of this practice (or his company) discovers what is going on and presses suit to get the money they have paid unnecessarily.
Lying to get money is a type of theft. That means criminal charges against everyone involved. Yeah...I'd make sure the old resume is shined up, myself. When your company gets hit with a major lawsuit and the big players wind up in court facing criminal charges, you might develop a bit of concern about your job then.Big Don Thanks this. -
Back in the 90's there was a receiver in Texas, south of Dallas area if memory serves, can't remember the name, but the guard was charging driving $30. to enter the property, When I got to the gate , and he asked me for the fee, I denied paying, he said he could not allow me on the property unless I pay, so I told him I'll move out of the way until a supervisor comes out and explain to me what this $30. charge was for, After I pulled out of the way I called them and asked for someone to come out and clarify what this charge was for, when the shift supervisor came out, he asked me why was I refusing to enter the property, I told him I'm not refusing, I'm refusing the $30. charge to enter your property, he then says, we don't have a $30 dollar charge!, I told him they need to inform their security guard then, because he was trying to charge me, and I know he charged at least two other drivers that where in front of me, The guard told the supervisor he was just joking around, but when they discovered that he had indeed charged the two other drivers he was promptly fired and the money returned to the other drivers, double checking if a shipper/receiver for charges is always advisable

'Driver Assist' is the driver opening the doors, backing to a dock and chocking the wheels. Anything more than that is extortion.
Stormdriven Thanks this. -
Hey ez, you aren't new to the forum, or to the business. What is going on here is criminal activity. You have fraud and extortion that is obvious at just a glance.
