Hello I am new here.
I have a bunch of family in the trucking industry, but would like to know a few things.
I am probably getting my CDL-A schooling paid for by the State of Michigan through the Michigan Works Wia program. I have heard a lot of people tell me that I should just go and get my schooling paid for by a company instead of going through the state. What advice do you guys have on that?
Also another thing is I didn't want to be tied down to 1 company for the first year just in case something went wrong or I didn't like who I was working with. Do most companies put you in a contract even they do not have to pay for your schooling?
Also, any advice to give to a new comer like I?
Thank you

The only contract you would sign would be to pay for the school, not for any set time working for a company. You would always be free to leave a company at any time, but if they put you through their school you would still have the obligation to pay for it if you left too soon.
With Swift you pay the debt over the first year, then they pay you back over the second year. So if you stay for 2 years you end up getting it for free.
If you can go to a private school and have it paid for through the WIA program, that would be best. That way you are not obligated to pay anything back and you can use the schools job placement program, which gives you many more choices.TomOfTx Thanks this. -
Do you think my options are greater if my schooling is paid for right off the bat (since I don't have to find a company that will pay for my training)?

Ahh sorry its very late/early in Michigan. Thank you for the advice.

Yep, best course is the private school paid for by WIA. Get all the endorsements, TWIC, passport so you will have more job opportunities. There's no contracts to sign with trucking companies doing it this way.

+1 on the endorsements, many top o the line jobs are becoming available because of the aging workforce, they will train a new guy with the necessary endorsements. a friend of mine in michigan is going thru the prehire process at cassens right now because he is willing to go to canada, and obtain a fast card for the border. he told me everyone else in the class just wanted to hold a steering wheel and live in the truck for months at a time, so no extra credentials for them, which in the long run will bite you in the ###.

Why would you use a company to get a CDL if you can get it free from your state?

Is going to canada worth it?
