Hey guys, I am a sprinter van owner operater. I am contracted with a local company and a few small bid board expedite carriers and run under their authority. However, I know some people in town with shipping needs and am considering approaching them to see about setting up some kind of dedicated route I could run for them once a week. I assume I need my own operating authority to do this. I checked out the ooida website and most of the things I read on there seemed to be geared toward people setting up larger companies with multiple vehicles. So im wondering what someone like me....just 1 guy with 1 van doing some small stuff....would need to do to be able to legally run a little route. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Is your cargo involved in interstate transportation? What's the gross vehicle weight of your Sprinter?
-
Running under the other guys authority, yes its interstate. The route im thinking of trying to set up would be intrastate, but am curious how much extra is involved getting interstate authority. GVWR is 9100, so no logs or scales or anything.

If you're under 10k you don't need a DOT number. All you need is an MC number and a 300k insurance policy.
-
Ok, thank you. I guess I should just call DOT and get it set up that way?
-
You can go to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and apply for your MC# and be ready to pay $300. Soon after you’ll be given your actual MC #. Not sure how many days afterwards, but you’ll need to provide proof of general liability to activate your authority. You’ll also probably need at least $100k cargo insurance once you’re up and running. Hope I didn’t leave out anything.

Awesome, sounds easy enough. Thanks. Is there an annual renewal fee you have to pay or anything?
