Hi everyone
I've been driving for many years but never gotten my own authority. I know the pitfalls, I know the extra hassle, but I'm still doing it!! I bought my truck and it will finally be paid off in 3 months. I plan on using this time to save money for getting my own authority and learning as much as possible.
First off, before I get into all the craziness my first question is this:
Where's the best place to find power only loads? (NO BACKHAUL).
I currently do power only, usually brand new empty trailers and my company always find these loads, but when I try.. all I find is back hauls. Currently all I use is getloaded.com - any other suggestions?
Also, obviously I need to find out about which company to use for factoring, how to calculate my miles in each state for fuel taxes, etc.. if anyone knows of a good source I could read to get this info myself it would be much appreciated!!!
Getting my own authority :)

Brand new empty trailers move cheap. When I was shopping for one all of the dealers basically all (every single one of them) quoted $2 a mile from the factory to their dealership or to your own place. If you think that is great money you are in for a rude awakening. It might be OK if you can do some loadouts but then you have to be concerned with damages which new trailers seem to be magnets for all sorts of unusual forklift damage, especially for us one truck guys. You'll be competing against companies that can cover an order of 200 trailers picking up at the factory delivering anywhere so going to be really difficult to get your foot in the door if you even can with some dealer. It's going to be a tall order doing power only. Brokers rape the already meager rates on new equipment PO so best to avoid them if you can. Probably won't take much to shine service wise. My buddy ordered one delivered to his house in Feb and it ended up at a dealer in Atlanta 250 miles away.
coolsdtrucker Thanks this. -

I couldn't tell you, I don't do power only, no money in that crap. The trailer is your money maker in this business, the truck just eats it. I decided to eat 350 miles of deadhead to go pick up my own from the factory because I didn't want some numbskull dragging it over every curb and parking lot anti-big truck rock between IN and TN. I was also concerned some greedy PO company with a bunch of leased op's would do a load out on it.

Having your own authority without a trailer is a lot like having a license plate with no car. I tried it for a while and it didn't end well.

I'd recommend you take a few steps back before you move forward with this. Po will be very difficult to make a go of it. And also you are asking about factoring ... I have to say this sounds like a recipe for disaster. I'm not trying to sound mean or discourage you .. But the way you are looking at going through with this, I would bet big that you will not be able to make it. I don't know you but I always hate seeing it when an independent tries and fails.

You can lease a trailer for about $800 per month, if u go month by month or 450-650 per month if you do a 1 year contract

Did I happen to mention that I am CURRENTLY MAKING A LIVING DOING POWER ONLY... hahahaha. I run my ### off.. It's what I like doing guys... I'm never stuck anywhere without a job to follow it up. I was simply asking if there was a better place to find these types of jobs or any other *positive* feedback about finding these jobs. But it looks like you guys don't know, so I'll continue my efforts while also heeding your imminent disaster warnings hahaha.

Ya you said that and do you expect to walk in to the same place you load for now and when you tell them you can do one load per week you think they will want to deal with you? Maybe if they only have one per week going out but I bet it's much more than that. Are you going to call your employer now when you get your own authority and expect to get a load that way? Or call CHR and TQL and try your luck? More power to you ....

Well for one thing, I am well aware that fleets get prioritized because they can bid lower on huge jobs with lots of loads. That's trucking in a nutshell. But I've seen these loads pop up as singles plenty. If I got a good savings in the bank it's enough to keep me afloat until I start making some good contacts and beating some doors down, getting in good with sales people, etc. My bills are small. I did that on purpose so I could finally jump into my own trucking business. And later if I can't keep busy and make the money, I'll buy a carriage for my horse haha I've already planned for the fact that maybe you guys are right. I've heard it plenty ....believe me. Maybe trailer is the way to go. I'm not that stubborn. I've considered it. but I love just dropping that trailer and bobtailing to the beach or some other cool spot and never bumping a #### dock ever again
