What is needed at DMV when you want to take a written test for CDL class A permit?

I heard that if you take the class A, you will have to take the General Knowledge, Airbrakes and Combination. Is there an additional fee if you take other restrictions such as HazMat, Tanker, etc.?

Once you pass the written test, I believe it's for the driving test this time.

Do you need to go to school to show certification before you can take the behind the wheel?

Depending on your state fees will vary. In my state if you take all the tests together it's one fee. If you take the general, air brakes and combination one day then decide a month later you want to add tank or hazmat you'll have to pay an additional fee. I think it's best to take them all together.

No, you don't need to go to school or show certification to take the skills and drive test.

Well what I'm told by my state is you need to have a DOT physical and money.

Yep that's about right, really easy tests.

Those other things are not restrictions, they are endorsements. I would think yes there is additional fees to take the tests.

You can take the tests in the morning, if you pass them then take your road test in the afternoon.

No but the problem is you should be trained on driving a truck before trying to take the test. I for one think it is too easy for people to get their CDL, the road test doesn't cover much and the written tests are way to easy.

You must have DOT physical before you go.
first test is General Knowledge, you can do all at once or 1 a day, but first will be General Kn.

I'm in Illinois, so year ago I did General and Passenger endorsement, road test (it was for stretch limo 24pax).
Now I decided to go for CDL A and last week passed Air Brakes, next week going for Combination and then Pretrip and road test.
Cost? They didn't charge me yet, but last year I paid 60 or 50$.

For Road test you have to make appointment.

You guys are boosting my confident. If you take all the written tests and not pass all of them, what are the tests that you need to pass to get the CDL class A permit? I'm guessing it will be the major three > General Knowledge, Airbrakes and Combination <

For other endorsements like tank, is it required to road test a tanker to remove the restriction as well? or you just need to pass the class A permit and endorsements restriction will be removed as you pass the written test for it.

In the road test, does your tractor need a semi-trailer when you do the actual road test at the DMV? I believe yes but just wanna make sure what are the rig requirements when you do the road test.

This is for Illinois (for other state shouldn't be much different):
    [h=2]Endorsements[/h]
    • Air Brakes — Further testing is required is required if the vehicle is equipped with air brakes. An "L" restriction is placed on a CDL if an individual is not able to operate a vehicle that is equipped with air brakes. To qualify to operate a vehicle equipped with air brakes, an applicant must successfully pass the written air brake test and take the CDL skills test in a vehicle equipped with air brakes. To remove an "L" restriction from a CDL, an air brake written test and a drive test in a vehicle equipped with air brakes are required.
    • Combination Vehicle (X) — Further testing is required to drive combination vehicles.
    • Passenger Endorsement (P) — Further testing is required to drive a vehicle designed to carry 16 or more passengers (including the driver).
    • Charter Bus Endorsement (C) — Further testing is required to drive a bus transporting students involved in school sponsored activities.
    • Doubles/triple Endorsement (T) — Further testing is required to drive double or triple trailers.
    • Hazardous Materials Endorsement (H) — Further testing is required to drive a vehicle transporting hazardous material that requires placarding. The hazardous materials endorsement written test must be successfully completed each time your CDL is renewed.
    • School Bus Endorsement (S) — Further testing is required to drive a yellow school bus transporting students to and from school and/or school-related functions.
    • Tank Endorsement (N) — Further testing is required to drive a vehicle designed to carry any liquid or gaseous material within a tank that is permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle or the chassis.
    • [h=2]Fees[/h]
      • New applicants not possessing a Class A, B, or C Illinois CDL — $60
      • Additional $5 fee for applicants renewing a L or M license.
      • Applicants renewing a current Illinois CDL — $60
      • Additional $5 fee for applicants renewing a L or M license.
      • Applicants renewing a current Illinois Limited School Bus CDL — $20
      • Applicants possessing a non-CDL upgrading to a CDL — $50
      • Applicants possessing a CDL upgrading to a different class CDL — $5
      • Applicants possessing a CDL adding/changing an endorsement/restriction — $5

What I am thinking right now is if I take the tank written test and by the time I go for the road test, they'll ask me to road test for it as well...do you only need to pass the class A permit and endorsements restriction will be removed as you pass the written test for it?

does the tractor has to have semi-trailer at road test? I wonder cause at DMV, it's not enough space to have a trailer truck from where I live.

Tanker endorsement doesn't require a road test with a tanker truck; neither does doubles/triples; just a written test at the DMV. The trucking companies will train you for the driving.
