Yeah Magnum certainly is not as big as Conway (by no means) but like I said in the previous post, they are a lot more diversified than they appear. When I went up there for my orientation, I was actually blown away with what Magnum is, and how many different facets there are to the company. So hopefully they will be able to survive "the pinch". Guess we'll all find out together.

Well I got to do something rather cool today. I am actually on hometime for the next couple days. I had spoken with my school and they asked me to stop by if I got a chance.

Well I took Lil' Man down so the students would get to see him (off course I made sure he got a sponge bath before I took him down there). Got there around lunch and had lunch with Wayne and Jerry. It was GREAT to see the both of them. And then Victor got back from lunch and I got to talk to him too (it was great to see all of them, including Donna and Charlie (the owners)). Then I was asked if I could talk to the students. I agreed, although I told them I really didn't know a whole bunch. They said that they would like me to talk to them about what it was like starting out and what to expect. Now there was something I did know. Also, I opened my truck and let them climb through and see how it was setup. A lot of them made statements about all of the conveniences of home. I told them that IS my home 20+ days of the month.

The students were real receptive, and we had a great time. Basically, I told them about my experiences in CTA, training with Kurt, hunting for a job, learning the etiquettes of the road, truck stops and weigh stations. I also talked to them about expectations and "how it really is" when you get out there on your own for the first time. So it went really well and Charlie actually had asked me to come back whenever I could and that he would appreciate it if I could talk to students in the future. I happily accepted.

It was nice to give back and talk to people who are right now where I was a few months ago. And I made it very clear that I did not know it all, but I did know what it was like to get started and what worked best for me. And hopefully I was able to answer the students questions (which were a bunch) with some information that will help them in the future.

So that is how my day went! Hope yours went well too.

That's awesome! It sure is nice to read things are going well for you. Things are pretty bleak these days, on the news and in this forum. It's good to hear a newb having a good experience.

I only wish you could've recorded the whole event so we could hear what you had to say about starting out.

    Hey there Andrew -

Well, for the most part, I just laid it on the line and told them exactly how it all came together and what I had to do to make it happen. Which is pretty much the same stuff I had posted on here. And I also told them about my experiences on the road and certain observations that I have made. And then they asked questions about this and that. Some I was able to answer, some I told them I had never had to "Do" "that" and didn't have a clue.

But it was really neat to be able to let some of these guys know what is to come.

As usual, the better part of a group really doesn't have that concept in their heads, thinking that this is some sort of vacation and sightseeing venue. These are a lot of the guys who quit in the first year, I bet.

hehehehe yeah there is a little bit of humor in there, but also describes a "thorough cleaning". When you take your truck to one of these interstate truck washes, it is like watching a bunch of guys assault your truck with presssure washers. And the trucks look great when they come out.

But you can't beat a hands-on washing followed by towel drying everything.

Yup - it was interesting to see the looks on some of their faces when I said that. With some, it was like someone turned the light on. Others looked like they had been thwapped in the head!
