O.K. I've heard it from ALL sides, for Years !.... so let me see If I'm in the ' Ball Park '....as far as which gives People the Chance to Make The Most $$$$ !

    Being on thier Own....

Am I Correct ? In saying If I get My Own Authority, that I can, After getting ALL The Legal & Insurance Requirements.....

    (a) Find a Dependable & Reputable Load Board.

    (b) Sign on with a Dependable & Reputable Factoring Company.( So I don't have to Worry about being PAID ! a Few Days After I make My Delivery.)

    (c) Go with E.B.S., ( Even though I REALLY DON'T want to ! ) instead of Paper Logs ....To Cover My base's with D.O.T !

    (d) Pick My Loads and let the $$$$ Roll In !
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are the 4 Basic Steps I have Condensed to being on your Own....

I Know there is A LOT More than This !....But let me know IF ? It can be This Simple !

The second D part is the hardest. Seems like it will roll out more than it rolls in.

Ok, you are in a part of our great nation where most rates are lower than usual for vans and flats getting out of Florida. Reefer stuff is sporadic, and depends on the weather. You do not seem to be very experienced in the business world, or else you would have already studied and made a plan. Experience can be a very expensive teacher. There is so much more to DOT rules than just keeping a good log book.
My advice is to read previous posts, there has been a lot of dicussion on the subject. Good advice can be found, if you will take the time to find it.

Having your own authority gives you some long term opportunities you can't get with a lease deal, but leasing gives you a lot of bang for your buck right out of the gate over playing the load boards. If you don't have a better plan than working load board freight I can almost guarantee you would be money ahead the first couple years leasing on with a solid carrier.

and your forgetting the brokering companies that dont pay or require 30 to 45 day grace period. with running your own authority there are a million things to look at. personally if you want to pull your own trailer like i will be doing soon again. find a company that lets you lease your truck and trailer and find your own loads. for example land star. kaplan mercer are a few i can think of off the top of my head. places where you run under their authority but work how you want to....easier cheaper. now if you have something setup where a customer has steady freight for you than maybe get your own....

I have a buddy that started fresh never drove for a company before and when he had his DOT adit he was in big trouble they spent hours with him and said come back in 30 days at the time he was factoring all his loads and that company only approved half the loads he wanted let's just say he only made it just over a year before he quit

Leasing is the only way to go for new drivers you learn on someone elses dollar not yours

Then add up all the money and find that after paying the accountant, IFTA service, factoring fees, etc, you end up with less than if you would have leased to that giant, mega carrier.
