That is a legitimate concern, but perhaps overblown. The vast majority of Americans never get one although the risk is certainly there.
But what enjoyable activity does not contain a certain degree of risk?
People are killed on the ski slopes, but society doesn't look down their noses at skiers.
Or scuba divers, mountain climbers, race car drivers or football players for that matter, all activities that carry the possibility of death.
With the exception of AIDS most STDS do not carry the possibility of death.
I have only personally known one person in my entire life that contracted AIDS, and he was definitely in a high risk group. Not the crowd I ran with.
As far as the others go, you can't judge a book by it's cover. There is no "look" that will tell you how safe one is.
I will give you a perfect example by sharing a personal experience.
Imagine the least likely source of an STD, aside from your spouse.
Just close your eyes and think about it.
Come up with anything?
How about the girl next door. The sweet little sixteen year old girl in a nice suburban neighborhood. Mom approved even.
That's right folks. Here I was, eighteen years old, home from training in my spiffy new dress uniform. Take out the little sweetie next door to my folks.
And what a homecoming it was. Very nice, to say the least.
Until about ten days later when I reported to sick bay hurting awful bad.
The doc tells me gonorrhea. No way! I tell him.
No magic pills back then. A dozen big old hypodermics of penicillin in my skinny butt. No fun at all.
That was 1974 and haven't had an incident since.
Maybe I got my bad luck out of the way early.

Oh and FYI I am not trying to say I am out there looking for cheap thrills. I am just giving a what if opinion on this topic. Just saying I'd rather have a mutual buddy vs someone random, or vs trying to make a long distance relationship.

Mustanggt, you are very right about "the girl next door". Fot years now herpes among highschool students has been rampant.
Maybe the FMCSR should make the lizards carry medical cards. -
8/10 people carry oral herpes, and 1/4 carry the genital variety. Makes you think twice about letting the innocent girlfriend go down on you while she has a "cold sore", or "fever blister"...cause you can get both types on your goodies.
I'd be more concerned with getting something like HIV, or HEP C.....or even something like HPV and give it to the next girl since there is no way to test for it in men. (HPV) -
Burgs, those stats sound a little high. 8 out of 10 people? Would you mind sharing your source for those numbers?
-
Those are very high, however, I googled it and those stats are right. I would be very. very, very careful about just having a passing fling.
-
A lot of people have it and never show symptoms either. The cold sore thing is a bit of a myth. Cold sores are caused by the same kind of virus (they think, they don't really know for sure) but it's different from the full blown oral herpes. A cold sore is just a cold sore.
-
LavenderTrucker, I googled it also, looking for a professional source. Best I found was 1/5 with genital herpes, with a downward trend, from the National Center for Disease Control. Didn't really say much about the oral variety, but I did not spend a lot of time looking either.
