Just tell them the truth, you need a little time off, we all know its hard to concentrate on the road when there are issues at home.

If it is the issue just talk to your Boss. I want to drive, Family comes first. Let me deal with this, & I will do my part. There not Monsters. I know, I was safety for a huge company. You have to be stronger than an average man. Hope this helps.

You can also call the American Red Cross. They will confirm to your employer the situation. They do it for military folks all the time. Also understand your rights under the family medical leave act. You are covered as she is your mother. If the company fires you let them. Then sue. Get it before the jury and collect your pay. Go through the process first.

It looks to me that your situation qualifies as a family emergency, so no need to quit. You should be able to go back and pick up where you left off maybe with a different trainer. I know its a tough situation but you just need to explain to them what is going on. If they let you go over it you really don't want to work for them anyway do you? Plus it may helpm go in your favor if they take you to court go instead of giving them judgement by default. This may sound tough but its truth if you just left and didn't talk with any one you screwed yourself. Its ok to get off the truck in the middle of the night and start that journey home but call some one at the company at 8 am. That is called responsibility.
I got a similar call last June at 5a.m, they were putting my mother in a chopper medflighting her to 40 miles from where I was. I pulled up on a narrow city street just as the helicopter made his swing to land. A security guard was having a smoke and walked toward me as I stopped I pointed and said thats My Mama in that chopper where do I need to go. He gave me directions I told him call a wrecker and have the truck and trailer towed. After I seen her and other family got there I looked out it was still there, so we moved it. He passed it on to the person relieving him, so nobody was called. That shows that if you explain your circumstances there is still a little compassion in this crappy world.

that should indeed qualify as a family emergency. if not, then these priorities should go in this order. like cargo wahgo said, you only have one mom. family is #1. job is #2. I have worked out of town before. my mom was killed in a car accident in october of 2008. my wife ( in the same car) lost our baby. my point is, be with your family all that you can. you just never know. i quit that job because the boss tried to keep me from going home. screw the job, if worse comes to worse, you can get another one. you cant replace your family. cherish the wonderful time you have with them. i hope your mom pulls through and im sorry to hear about your situation. dont put more on your self right now. forget about this ######## and take care of your mom.

Story, My wife's handle was Navigator. Thought I could tell Ya, by now. Almost 10 years now. Got an Old Dog, a nice tractor, & me. Money means little, days mean little. Time heals all wounds, that's crap. Loads are another place to go. Check goes in the bank, I move on. Having it all, All by yourself, is a drag. Way it is.
