I have the choice of going Dry Van or Flatbed.

I'm asking for pros & cons from both. I'm 5'7" over weight (260#). I love to drive. Mostly would like to know which one would give the best home time. I don't mind being out for 3 weeks at a time.

I leased on to Mercer at age 50... my kid said I'd never handle it but I really enjoyed hauling those loads on a flat. Had to quit when my right shoulder wore out.

But it IS work... sometimes in the cold, rain, snow, wind, etc. But generally you have better shippers and receivers than with a van or reefer.... more $$, too.

Thanx Krooser, I just got off the phone with Swift. The recruiter answered all My question I had and also told me I would be better off starting with flatbeds. Where I live I'm just down the road from Highway 59 (Southwest Freeway) in Texas. I see lots of trucks and there is just something about seeing a Flatbed loaded going down the road..

I was also told I can get a dedicated run after 4-6 months out of Houston. That will work out great for me.. So at this point I feel I'll be a flatbedder. I still want to hear from others on this..

Be honest with yourself...How did you get to 260 lbs?

Flatbedding is work...will you work? If you will, you will lose some of that 260 lbs. Probably be good for you!:biggrin_255:

bobobrazil, I do like work but it seems I slacked off at My other jobs and let My weight got out of hand. I know after a few months I'll be down under 200#'s and be better off for it. Another good reason to be a flatbedder... Thanx.

Home time? Instructor with Swift (I seem to say that a lot, be nice having first hand knowledge one day) said there are a lot of short runs with flatbed division and that home time is much easier to have as opposed to van division.

Flatbed is more work, but more rewarding. Not everyone can do it. Also, the shippers/consignees are more tolerable. You have to use your brains when securing a flatbed load. You only need know how to close the doors on a van trailer. (and possibly weight adjustment)

These guys are right, there is a lot more work and responsibility in flatbedding! If you looking for the lazy mans job, reefer would be your choice.

Guido, I'm not trying to be smart or insensitive, but at your size, you might have trouble climbing around some of those loads. You sound like a wide load.

That could be dangerous for you. Tarping in bad weather is a ###### and you have to move around up there.
