wow first off i have to admit i googled a freightliner glider, and didnt know that you take a chassie and put a new body on it...in that case the engine and transmission have wear and tear still, and miles are miles on the components...i would take the new volvo with warranty

yes i do admit the volvos are expensive...if you are looking at the 12.7 id say go for it...good dependable engine, but what do i know i drive a company truck.

The gliders being sold have remanufactured engines rear ends and transmissions on brand spankin new cab and chassis. With warranty most of the time better then any on a new truck. If you're NOT running California and don't see yourself needing to. Buy the non emission glider truck. You will spend the same money off the lot for the 2014 Volvo and the glider truck. According to the experts if less then $50k of your yearly revenue comes from running California then having DEF DPF EGR SCR etc is not feasible. Unless of course being shut down due to a malfunction of a component that a engine doesn't have to have sounds fun to you
bigbyrc, nofilter, ivo K and 1 other person Thank this. -
A glider is a NEW truck with motor, trans and dif form the year the truck originally came out. the rest is brand new. You can provide used motor trans and difs, but it is much more common to buy the truck pre assembled with remanufactered motor trans and difs. Thus the components arnt 11 years old since they are remans.
That being said:
If your not going to CA, you dont need carb compliance.
FL GLIDER
Much better MPG
No DPF to repair
Cheap to maintian
Ugly on the outside
Volvo
worse MPG
Smoother ride
Electronic everything (can be a pro or a con)
way more expensive if anything goes wrong
id recommend a columbia glider. -
Volvos will eventually develop electric gremlins. These gremlins are notorious for showing up when it rains. But hey its your money.
Personally I would do a Freightliner, 13 speed w/od, 3.55 rears, 200 gallon tanks (100 ea), and a 500hp detroit. More shops out there that work on Detroits over the other engines.
Super singles will give you better mpg over traditional duals.
Get a APU and save your self a ton of fuel during your down time in a God for saken hole and 30 below weather outside.

Go with the gilder, get a Coronado! Sweet looking trucks when clean plus they get good fuel mileage. If you wanna save some money. Buy a decent used classic/Columbia/century for 25k, swap the engine for a reman($28k installed), run it for a while then have tranny and rears rebuilt for another $6-7k. I bet you save about 70k if not more by doing this! Brand new drive train= new truck!
this is prob the route I will end up taking as I've already rebuilt tranny! Next I'm going to get a new motor, then go thru rears! Repaint the truck and trailer and run it until she needs another! Learning from all these older guys out here with these sweet looking rides that are paid for.lovesthedrive, ivo K and nofilter Thank this. -
Also do you really think CA is the only place that restricts trucks with high emmissions?
Another thing to remember is what will the new Gilder truck be worth in 5 years. What will a new Volvo be worth in 5 years.
No brainer, go with the Volvo! Get the D13 rated at 500hp and the iShift gearbox. There is nothing out there to touch it on mpg with good power and the maintainance is cheaper than any other truck on the North American market today.
Stay away from the D16 engine though, it will break you in every way! If your thinking of getting a cummins stay away from the Volvo while running east coast, electrics in a cummins Volvo combo don't seem to play nice with each other.
Good luck what ever way you go.ivo K, nofilter and rollin coal Thank this. -
The volvo is the worst truck for holding it's value. I've got one that's 3 years old and worth less then 1/2 what it cost me to buy it. The ride sucks. Any truck with a set back axle and short wheel base will not ride great. The service departments suck. The D13 is ok. Nothing special about it. The fuel mileage is ok. If emissions is what you need broaden your horizons. I can't really really think of anything about a volvo that I can't live without
