I'm rarley close to 80k most of the time I'm in the low 60s. I've got a 06 W900L with an ACERT with about 750 hp. You know I can't remember a time thinking this much power is a waste. And it's gets really good mileage for the way I drive which is usually the speed limit +5. I drive across 22 and up 99 on a regular basis and there are times I wish I had more power.

I know of someone on here that had his 500 det bumped up to 650 h.p. without any hard parts changed. big difference in power & m.p.g. very inexpensive too. lastusername is the guy. maybe you can p.m. him to find more info.

What id "really good mpg". There is no way you got decent mpg running 750 horse. at "low 60's" i can make it up most hills with only 490 under the hood in top gear. I downshift on the 80,000 loads. To buy a motor that will get you up the hilll faster a small % of the time is a waste of fuel the rest of the time

You're one of these book smart people who's never driven a motor with any horses. Just because you have them doesn't mean you use them 100% of the time. Steering wheel holder from 435 horses to 750 equals poor mpg's and probably a torn up driveline. A driver gets better mpg's from more power.

Mid 6s most of the time. I've had it in the 7s but don't care to drive that way all the time. I doubt you could run across 22 from Blairsville Pa to Altoona, Pa empty and not have to downshift.
I've said it before just because you have the horses in the barn does not mean you need to feed them. At normal cruising speed your not going to be using any more fuel than a motor with less hp. I can control how many horses are being used at any one time. It's called a throttle and it's under my right foot. It gets about a mile per gallon better as a 750 than when it was a 550.

I hate to tell you this, as it will ruin our amusement, but every time you open your mouth you look more and more clueless.

Modern diesels have their injection timing set for emisssions, setting it at point more favorable for performance and economy can result in more power at an equivalent mpg, or better economy at the same power. Read up on the consent decree the resulted from the fight the EPA and engine makers had in the mid/late nineties. Everyone's engines used programming that passed the emissions test required, but shifted to a different injection map after some steady state running to improve fuel mileage. The result was the '04 standards went into effect earlier than they were supposed to, and resulted in blessings like the Cat 'bridge' motors.

And I guess that's all for pointless lesson #47.

Here's some homework for you: Detroit made a slight change in common engine architecture that has helped them achieve their slightly lower than average BFSC numbers when the Series 60's came out. What was it and why did help?
