doing the glider thing here. 2nd time around now... At first it sucks because your new truck is going to be old as balls unless you pay large for some restored rig but even then.... Its going to need expensive repairs before it can be used. Just when you think youre getting all the repairs done more problems and expenses come along. It can seem hopeless and sometimes it is hopeless. Lots of would be owner operators have bought used trucks which turn out too difficult and expensive to put on the road. Since any true glider is going to be at least 20 years old expect problems. A set of drive tires is worth $4000 minimum. A budget of $25,000+ for parts and repair is a good idea for any ancient rig going into service.
All said and done though, a couple years down the line gliders are good. Theyre simple and run good. Kinda loud and though, and not as nice to drive as a 2019. But, reliable and useable.
Doing it here in a 1996 FLD Detroit 11.1L. Bought 'er for $5000, driving daily.OldeSkool and Intothesunset Thank this. -

Trugo, Intothesunset and spyder7723 Thank this. -
Oh and i think its actually spelled PEEC leading to even more confusion about the c model.
Intothesunset and wore out Thank this. -
And not all C model Cats were the goofy electronical engine. My 1996 8PN C model was factory mechanical. Great engine
Trugo, wore out, spyder7723 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thanks for the clarification.
Crazy how the facts turn out.
Guess I will have something to wonder about. -
I'm real hazy on those middle 90s cats. By the time the e model came out it was all electronic. And my 91 Pete had a mechanical b. But everything in the middle confuses the heck out of me. Like my 93 w900 3406b PEEC. Its almost like caterpillar intentionally made their numbering system make no sense in those years.
Edit to add: on a personal side note. I think you are on to something with that early retirement thing. I just finished up my monthly paperwork and I'm looking at how little i worked in april so i went back through the monthly for the last two years. Its sad how little I'm actually working the last few years. Not sure why i don't just call it, but for now i can't quite get myself to do it. However i don't think it will be to many more years before i join you in the ranks of retirement.Last edited: Apr 25, 2019
