In light of my recent misfortune (car accident), I am trying to be optimistic. I don't expect to be able to retire, and I certainly don't expect to have a huge sum of money when all is said and done. However, I am hoping for a best-case scenario of having a clean bill of health, being able to pass a DOT physical, and possibly having enough to buy my own truck. Would buy a factory-built truck if I had to, but I am particularly interested in gliders. I don't really care if I go to California, and while I've had fairly good luck with DPF / DEF equipped trucks (exception: Intertrashable PornStars), I would like to avoid these systems altogether should I be able to make a move.
As I stated, I really don't care if I go to California. But I also wonder if this would limit my options as to who and where I can lease on with. I'm sure common sense dictates if you're buying your own truck, might as well get your own authority, but that comes with about another $30k in initial expense, or so I'm told.
But are gliders really worth it? I've heard that they are not all created equal and that some are not truly turn-key, even though they start up, run and drive. What's the skinny on all this?

More maintenance cost kinda sucks. Ongoing def expense sucks. If you don't need it and don't live in a place that tests or otherwise gives you a hard time then don't run it. The old trucks, I'm talking 6nz,s60, cm570 and older, are relatively simple to fix and have proven longevity.
I like my current truck with a working emissions system. But the next one will be a glider. It cost more up front where I live, may be that's cuz it's the chrome shop that builds whatever you want (12ga customs), but the higher fuel mileage, lower maintenance costs, and expected longer life outweigh the added expense. I will buy one to drive for myself when this truck is paid off and I will drive it until I don't want to drive one anymore.MartinFromBC Thanks this. -
You might want to read up on gliders from them.
Quality is something which they don't do.
Several threads on TTR mention the poor service offered by them.Sublime, Rideandrepair and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
Isn't there a chain of peterbilt dealers in Nebraska or Iowa that builds them as well?
If you want to go on the cheap, Schneider always selling used gliders. I get emails for them every once in a while. -
The biggest issue with modern emission systems is too many drivers are stuck in the 1980's with their habits. Not saying SCR/DPF aftertreatment systems are bulletproof by any means though.
Rideandrepair, Bean Jr., haycarter and 1 other person Thank this. -
Was there a recent ruling that went against gliders for your province? @AModelCat
Wonder how this will play out. If they will also be looking for trucks that look like it's all legit yet produce black smoke lol... Wouldn't surprise me with who is currently running the place.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Is this really question. there is no cons to a glider but good luck getting on schedule
