A lot of guys are opting to do the glider thing. But the money involved is close to the price of a new rig. I guess you get a rebuilt engine
with some kind of warranty in a new frame and new cab. I know the engines are emissions free but if you are spending 120K wouldnt
it be better to just get a new Cascadia or KW that gets 7.5 mpg and work on small trim issues to get it to 8mpg and be able to run in California too..??? Then you could source a machine shop that could make cheaper replacement parts for emission parts than buying them from a dealer. Its more than likely that those systems will need parts. Those components are not rocket parts and could be made by a talented metal worker or even by an O/O on a CNC machine.
I'm curious why you think a glider is a better way to go...

emissions trucks are junk. do a search on them. On the other hand i bet your local truck dealer will tell you that they got all the bugs worked out. will you believe him? i sure as hell would not. these emissions trucks will not go a million miles. the engines cant breathe and they are lucky to hit 500,000 miles before they blow up.

I bought a glider about a year ago. wish id done it 5 or 6 years ago. i get 8mpg or more average pulling heavy tankers

most drivers that don't have a glider bad mouth them, but you never, never here those of us with them saying "i regret getting a glider". yet the internet is full of new truck buyers saying " I wish I would have got a glider". As said by MiKe, I too wish had got mine earlier!!!

for the record my glider was 115K fully loaded, new Coronado with the package I have are in the 150K plus FET.

Have two Drivers/trucks not legal for CA, 9 months into this year and they are happy as I am not going there. Plus I am in AZ and I dont need their crap. Expensive gas and slow speed limit, they can have it.

Ok... again. I got a 2013 FL glider. Factory rebuilt Series 60 DDEC IV, 500 hp 1850 torque. Factory rebuilt Eaton 18 speed. New Meritor 14x drive axles with full lockers. Every gauge available in the Signature interior wood grain dash. Every cabinet available in the 70" sleeper wood grain trim, including airline style wrap around cabinets. Replaced the stock waste gate turbo with a Borg Warner 171702. Replaced the stock exhaust manifold with a ported/polished/coated manifold. Dual stacks up the back with Walker Megaflow mufflers. Truck with 53' dry box trailer... total empty weight no more than 32,000 lb with full fuel tanks. Truck typically averages high 7 mpg. For the summer months... 8+ mpg average.

Total cost, ready to haul freight........ $112,000. Nothing new even comes close to the value I got out of this glider. Absolutely no contest.

I concur... CA no longer is a part of the contiguous United States. It is a foreign country. I have avoided CA since '99 with no regrets. Nothing there I need to take a truck into for. And it allows me to not compete with those poor folks that have those emission laden trucks. They have a lot more operation cost, so they need that CA freight I guess.

A machine shop to build emissions components for cheap? Ridiculous.

^it would be an old whooped out truck that wouldn't be worth fixing at that point...or am I pointing out the obvious?
a glider means brand new truck with the most important components rebuilt and installed to save you money and hassle. that should be their tagline.

7.5MPG on a new truck?? I question this even though I know it's possible (maybe at 60MPH.) Like the other poster said, "these new engines can't breathe." The company I work for has a few new Cascadias. I pull a tank (most aerodynamic trailer there is except maybe an empty step.) I've done the math, the trucks are set at 62MPH 1400 RPMS 3:70 rears getting 6.7MPG. Not exactly great fuel mileage in my book for slow speeds and a tank trailer. Yes the trucks are probably geared wrong but the DEF DPF filter add weight and all this stuff is expensive to fix. Two weeks ago I had an issue with the DEF in Yuma AZ. Tank was full but a bad check valve indicated it was empty. Had to get towed from Yuma to Tucson since no one in Yuma had the software to diagnose this problem. These emissions engines are garbage! The wrecker operator told me that business is booming and it's not old trucks that are keeping him busy but rather new ones.

I would think most machine shops would not want to help you alter a government mandated part, just like the catalytic converters on cars, but I could be wrong.
