Get a class A and all the endorsements you can. There will be plenty of class "A" local work if (when) the economy picks up. The children on the school buses will respect you more.

I meant the kids trying to get you honk your air horn as you go by..They don't seem to realize a Class B truck has air horns too! Only a Peterbilt flat top with a Wilson cattle rack on the back.

NEVER, EVER limit your options. Always do the most you can do within any educational system, be it commercial truck driving, or college. By NOT self-limiting your options, you open up a range of opportunities, a 'key' if you will, that will allow YOU to decide which doors to open, rather than finding that those same doors are locked while you are desperately knocking. One primary difference between those who are successful in life, from those constantly looking in from the sidelines envious of those are 'making it', is the ability to make good life choices; given your 'gift' of tuition to a training program, which choice do you honestly feel is the best one to make?

If you receive your class A, you have the option of going in whatever direction you want to in the driving industry. Right now you may feel like your hiring options may be limited, but that is only for right now, here in the present; your future is still developing and is unseeable. Your current situation may not be perfect, but what if you discover, six months after completing training, that you had a desire..... and an unexpected, stellar opportunity.... to hire on with a good trucking company, but gosh darn it all, you missed it because you didn't go the CDL-A route?

My son got his class A and is doing deliveries for a lumberyard in a straight truck for now, they told him they will put him in the tractor trailers eventually but everyone new starts with the class B truck deliveries. They started him at $14 per hour, when he's there awhile and drives the tractor trailers he can go as high as $26 per hour. This is local home every night and pays overtime after 40 hours. They hired him cause he has the class A.

make sure to tell your son that if they start putting him on tractor trailers to tell them he wants more. when i started working in a lumber yard as a yard dog on the forklifts they wanted to give me a measily 1 dollar raise to go use my CDL license, after i had been there for almost 10 months. i said absolutely not bump it up 2 bucks.

If you're a yard dog with no CDL they start you at $12 per hour.;cdl holders start at $14.You get reviews and raises twice a year, the guy that he's teamed with to load and make deliveries is making $18 per hour after 2 years. The downside is it's a lot of heavy lifting;window and door assemblies;but my son works out so it's easy for him,a lot easier than the construction demolition job he left.Upside; a lot of homeowners give tips,$20-$30,when they bring the materials in the house.

Just remember to protect your CDL. I have friends who waited to get their CDL, because they knew they were not ready to settle down.

Just another aspect for you to consider.

I can only echo what has already been said.

DO NOT limit your options especially if you can get help paying for better training. That's like someone telling you they'll send you to school to be a heart surgeon and you decide to go for a medical assistant program.

Get the training. Keep your options open and whatever you do, do not ever, ever give up that CDL once you get it even if you swear over and over to yourself you'll never drive again.
