I've been doing this in the past as a company so I know the routine, but I am thinking about buying a truck and hauling as an o/o for a company that i have in mind. I need some input about what I need to know before I do this. What kind of revenue can I be expecting? What kind of expenses should I be prepared for besides fuel? What kind of help should I expect from a good company.

there are no good container companies in charleston or savannah.

the rates will be from a dollar to 1.20 a mile to the truck , container hauling with fuel prices as they are now is very difficult/
    .
as for expenses, tags, repairs, dray charges, you pay for blowouts on the container chassis.

Hauling containers is a "lose lose" situation. A percentage or per mile is what they (companies) will offer. Plus, you have fixed and variable expenses that you need to cover. Fuel is going to kill you. With all that, you will be traveling down a difficult road.

jess-juju, if the driver is getting 42 cents per mile that is leaving the owner of the truck ,at road link current mileage, maybe 80 to 85 centsper mile to operate, at 4.00 buck a gallon in the sav area now IF the trucks get 6.5 mpg fuel is 60 cents per mile. and that above doesnt figure in dray charges, who pays for blowouts etc. yes on a container chassis the owner of the truck pays for blowouts on those ragged container chassis.

that leaves 20 to 25 cents a mile for all other expenses such as tags, permits etc.

I have lworked in trucking around the sav area for 32 years , i have tried to pull containers myself, i have several friends and even family members that pull out of the sav ports.

they get home often and they seem to be happy with 6 to 800 a week pulling cans.

to get an idea of how the container outfits take a driver to the cleaners, i have picked up a container on a flatbed , take it to atlanta, unload and bring the can back to sav. another guy working for a can company in sav. picked up the same ship line can on a chassis and delivered with me next morning. his rate for the trip 1.17 cents a mile round trip, mine was 2.02 a mile round trip.

and jess- yours friends boss IS slowly growing broke pulling cans out of savannah

just go to craigslist and look at all the wonderful ads for savannah and charleston

90 cents a mile or 1.00 loaded and .85 empty with a fuel surcharge figured off what the load pays , which usually works out to 30 to 35 cents a mile.

the first time you blow a tire and they say you then owe 350.00 and they deduct from settlement, see how much you love it then.

u looking at round trip or loaded miles? i usually only figure on loaded miles b/c no matter what loaded miles is what you get paid on. im paid on 75% of the line haul and that comes to about 1.75-1.90 depending on the run. then deadhead the other way. that is the thing with containers is that u are always deadheading one way. now for me the reason i deal with it is i live 20mins from the port and since the can has to comeback to the port im home every night and off every weekend. life is give or take, and im losing on money in order to be home.

most importantly u have to be at the right place with the right people. my dad has been messing with cans for the last 25 years so i have his connections and knowledge of the ports, its system, and companies. my dispatcher is good and we haul only one ship line so when exports are up im able to get a load outta the port and then pick one up to bring back.

dang sure wont get rich by no means but if u can find ur niche there is a buck to be made.
