hello all, in mid jan of 11' a few friends and myself will be heading out to Yellowstone for a week long snowmobile trip through the park.
we are going to be driving out, were gonna take I-80 from Pa all the way across. I was wondering, since a lot of you have been out for a number of years, could anyone throw out a few suggestions on things to do along 80, i know its gonna be winter time, and most places will be closed, but im sure their are still things we could do/see along the way.
places to eat that are different from the reuglar places.. no fast food.
really anything... were gonna be leaving out on thursday night from pa, and are not expected in yellowstone till sunday, so were hoping to check out the winter sights along our trip..
we talked about running 90 across, but did that last year when we rvd out to montana, and we are just looking to take a new rout...
with it being winter and knowing what kind of " wonderful " weather we will run into taking back roads is a def. no...
so any suggestions would be nice,
    thanks in advance

Strategic Air and Space Museum just West of Omaha, Mahoney State Park exit off I-80. Lots of history and neat stuff. Here's their website:

The worlds biggest ball of baler twine. Gee, Geta Frommers vacation guide. I've run I 80 a thousand times but all I saw were truckstops.

A word of advice run Nebraska at night....you wont miss anything at all, or get someone else to drive so you can sleep......my opinion only there.

If you get into Utah on I80 there are alot of cool rock formations and one in particular called the Devils slide very cool stuff.

If you stop in Chicago I recommend the "Small Bar" Iowa 80 truckstop has good food just west of Davenport,It's really a boring trip til you get to Yellowstone,I have been there in winter it's paradise for the snowmobiler you should probably just get there asap.

Or set the cruise and lock the steering wheel straight and everyone can go to sleep.

    Heres my two cents:
I live in SW WY...and I imagine you will most likely come to about Rock Springs and then take 191 up to Yellowstone?

If so...heres a idea for a detour that will keep you busy for a day or so. Instead, Take I80 past Green River, WY and take US30 West. Then Take WY 89 which turns into UT 30 up to Garden City, UT. Take US 89 up into the mountains and into the Cache National Forest. Its about ten minutes from Garden city, but there is a fairly decent sized snowmobiling area up there in the Winter time.

Before I teamed, I went through this area daily on my way back home. That snowmobile area west of Garden City is at 8k feet and they get lots of snow. There is a huge wide open area at the top of the mountain for snowmobiling and it is part of a big ol snowmobiling network of trails in the area that extend for quite a ways. I remember staying at the top of the hill one night at the rest stop and reading a pamphlet about the trails.

    Heres some more info:
