and he should be aware that all of his onduty notdriving time counts against his 70,

Yes, you can exceed your 70 on duty not driving. You just cannot drive past the 70th hour.

And it wouldn't be too bad if they are only working M-F. He can drive 7-8 hours, let the student drive 7-8 hours....so we're talking probably 16-17 hour days for the guy doing the training when you factor in loading, unloading, etc. If he averages 17 hours per day, that means on Thursday night he'd have 68 hours. He can drive those 2 hours he has left, then turn it over to the trainee and the trainee could run another 11 to get them home if he needed to. Reset over the weekend and go again Monday morning.

You can on-duty-not-drive for 3 weeks straight without ever going off duty.....you just cannot drive. The FMCSA doesn't care what you are doing or how many hours you've worked if you are NOT behind the wheel....you just cannot drive until you have had 10 hours off duty and have not been on for more than 70. Either by picking up hours in the 8 day recap or through a 34 hour restart, you've got to have hours on your 70 in order to drive.

All the big school companies have a licensed "trainer" and a permit holder student in the trucks.
After driving x hours, the students tests out and then gets a license. The CRE recruiter told me they"team" for like 80,000 or whatever (I immediately forgot most of what he said< g>) hours. It should e the same as driving a car on a permit with a licensed driver.
