Just my gut, but it doesn't sound like he has probably vested himself with you in particular. No telling how many drivers he has on a string at this moment. I really wish you the best. You sound eager and also wanting to please (this is normal), make sure that he doesn't take advantage of you. Don't forget, there is a reason he is having to look for a driver.

    That's a good point.

I talked to him finally this afternoon. He hadn't called me back because the run to montana has been shut down. Apparently the season has run it's course for the asphalt gig he was doing.

He hadn't called me because he didn't know himself what we were going to do yet. He made some calls after that conversation and called me back. He says he has a couple local hauls we can do tomorrow to get me better acquainted with what he's doing. He wants me to meet him at 3:00 am tomorrow morning to get started. Sounds like these runs are just up and down the Wasatch front....(lovely all that construction on I-15) ick. (has several dozen miles running in 3 narrow lanes with concrete barriers and no shoulders)

I AM very eager to get into trucking and OUT of what I've been doing.

I wish I didn't feel so intimidated to talk about the money with him. I don't think it's because he's hard to approach as much as because my current employer has such a domineering demeanor it's kind of gotten to me if you know what I mean. I've got to recovery my sense of self worth after the work I have had to accept until I could get in a better situation. I hope this IS a better situation....or leads to it.

At any rate where I have been working doesn't have a committed need for me full time that's part of the problem I am not getting full time hours...so Monday is the day they typically are most non-committal to me. It seems perfectly fine to me to go driving on Monday at least and see how much more I can learn about what potential this driving job has and then in the spirit of taking things one day at a time see where things are at the end of the day when I know more.

It beats sitting home on my thumbs looking thru help wanted ads. :biggrin_25526: I am eager to find a good steady place to work that actually pays me enough to live on!

Thanks for the encouragement and the common sense reminders. Geeze I'll be getting up at 2:00 am! :biggrin_25521:

...that wasn't too bad on my end. I don't know totally what he thought.

His situation for the next two weeks is that he's committed to the company he's contracting with. After that he's free to do whatever he wants and what he wants is to team drive with me doing the Montana oil run. Eventually he wants to get another truck and have us both run a truck. We are kind of different folks, he's got a cowboy streak in him. We also have some common interests where energy is concerned...we seem to have similar views on many things.

The load is asphalt oil in a tanker and tanker pup. 125000 lbs loaded on 9 axles. I actually was surprised how much easier it turned around corners and tracked from what I expected.

For the next two weeks all he has is local runs, not into Montana and not every day on account of weather impacts what is able to be used apparently. He really doesn't need me for two more weeks. His wife is about to have their first child together so really that's where his focus is and staying close to home for the birth.

I wish I felt like I could do the Montana run myself and keep the truck rolling but honestly I want to get a little more familiar with his truck and the loading protocols before I do a solo run. It's nice to just be able to get immediate answers to questions. I guess I'll hang with the old job for another two weeks while i train with him rather than try to rush into the new one. I'm just happy to know the new one is there, and to know that I'm not going to be stuck in the old one forever. I can be patient for two more weeks. :)
