I'm gonna try and make this simple and sweet.
I was recently laid off by a company in the Philadelphia region. I have a class A & TWIC, but finding a good job in the area is tough.
I put in an app with some recruiter for US Xpress. I would LOVE to do be an OTR driver, but with a 2 year old, and the wife 6 months pregnant, am I about to kick myself in the ###?
I live right outside of Philadelphia, and they have a terminal in Shippensburg, PA, which is about 150 miles from me. They told me they have orientation every Monday for 3 days, then i'll be out on the road.
Am I about to make a dumb move, or is this worth while?
going OTR with US Xpress?

I am from Delaware, the husband of a friend is driving for one of the Mushroom Companies in the Avondale/Kennett Square Area. He is home weekend. She told me they were hiring. I will try to get the name of the company if you are interested.

If I personally were in your position I would not do it. I have been driving for 16 years and know exactly what it entails and what it takes to make it out there. As an over the road driver if you want to make any kind of money at all you need to be out for a minimum of 4-6 weeks, coming home for three days at the end of your stint. This means seeing the family roughly 10-12 times a year!
US Express does have regional positions but from what I hear they are sometimes hard to get into and you must first have some seniority.
There are a lot of local gigs in your area though. You are kind of in the freight lanes out there so trucking companies are a little more abundant, increasing your odds of landing a local gig with no experience. Where I live (Florida) local gigs don't pay crap! Usually around $8-$13 an hour. Wages are probably a little better where you are but the cost of living is a little higher too.
Like I said, this is would be my personal choice if I were in your shoes. I would do my best to research the local gigs and possibly maybe something regional. Keep in mind, the good gigs aren't usually advertised. The companies that have low turn over rate don't spend money to advertise. Happy drivers = low turn over rate! You are going to really have to do your homework to find em!
Good luck man!

I sent her a message. As soon as I hear back I will PM you. They live in the Port Deposit MD area, so you are as close or closer than they are. I am not mistaken he runs two trips to New England a week. I am sure there are other routes though.
RyanLeary77 Thanks this. -
i agree....i am a over the road driver..i stay out 2 months a time..now that i am owner operator is the same way, even if i came home, it will be only for 2 days.,...in your situation, i wont go over the road..get a regional haul..u.s express has them..run the north east and be home on weekends....besides u.s express dont have otr..mostly its regional stuff..true otr driver goes all 48 sates not just half way to chicago and back to east coast...

They were offering me regional work, but I don't think I am going to do it. It's just to much. Maybe a local company like KMac was talking about, but these big companies scare me with their BS!

well, once you put your time in the trucking industry, then you will be able to understand it better...trucking is not perfect but, you will be able to take care of your family if you got with the right company...not everyone can do otr or local work...you have to find what you are good at it and stick with it..........

I had the perfect job, driving a Heavy Wrecker and Doing over-sizes. . . and I left that for what I thought was a good oppurtunity. I lasted 2 months until the state shut the company down. . . .

it happens..companies go out of business or they shut down or merge.....
